Students living in northern Mexico have skirted residency requirements to attend U.S. public schools for generations, but when the superintendent in one Texas border town got word that about 400 school-age children were crossing the international bridge each day with backpacks but no student visas, he figured he had to do something.

Simple solution: remove all taxes that go toward the school system, and require each student's parents to pay tuition. No money on the first day of school? Go home.

"If the students are willing to get up early to get across, it shouldn't be held against them," said Garcia, as she waited to pick up her 5-year-old and 8-year-old from school.

So, if a thief is willing to take the chance of getting caught or killed when he robs a bank, then it shouldn't be held against him, as well? That statement of entitlement from that women is the most asinine I've heard in a long time. Does she not understand that crossing the border illegally is ILLEGAL, no matter how noble the purpose? The kids she is defending get a free education that they have no right to on the backs (and hard-earned tax dollars) of legal citizens. How would she like it if the tables were turned and US citizens went to her country and got free anything? Well, I guess she will never know. Mexico doesn't give any freebies away to illegals. Except maybe a prison cell.

Plyler vs. Doe
Kelt Cooper should look into it.
Texas already lost this battle to the SCOTUS.

PS - All states with schools near the border of Mexico need to implement the same policy. It's great to know that someone is actually enforcing an established policy.

This is just a drop in the bucket of Illegal aliens that attend American schools paid for by the American taxpayers.

How many other border town schools are educating Mexican citizens?

Illegal aliens have NO right to attend our schools. Our children have been forced to go without long enough and had too many classes cut to accomidate Illegal aliens that should not be here in the first place.

Build a big honkin wall at our southern border. It should be so large, it can be seen from outer space.

Mexico should support it's own. We'll take care of ours.

Who will step up and enforce common sense, and not cave in to the elements trying to rip our country apart?

We need to control our borders. Obame, how about hiring 1,000,000 men to build a huge stone fence, like the Great Wall of China?

Name it after yourself - that would solve the health care "crisis".

Nope, the ACLU will more than likely sit this one out, since it's got nothing to do with civil liberties in the US, but rather alot to do with people with no residency in the US using taxpayer-funded schools to educate their Mexican children.

It's simple: Prove residency in school district, kid goes to school there.

agreed and if the parents of these Mexican school kids want an American Education then they should pay the $10,000 cost that the district antes up per kid. It's pretty simple actually and it's done in municipalities in New Hampshire so there's precedent already

Why should Texas taxpayers pay to educate aliens? Why should any of us pay to give illegals free healthcare?

Isn't it long past time America woke up and got its priorities right? Leftists in this country are leading you citizens down the rosy path to OBLIVION.

If I went to Mexico (and I admit I wanted to, before it became a failed state) would Mexicans give me free education? Food? Housing? Healthcare?

PS kudos to the Superintendent for not looking the other way but of course the charges of racism will fly since this is all they have left to level at someone doing the right thing. It's a good point to remember that when someone calls someone a racist or Nazi these days to disregard it since the term is so overused as to be worthless.

The schools here are required to ask where you live and you have to show prove (i.e. a utility bill with your name on it) UNLESS you are mexican. I kid you not, that is what I was told by Ysleta schools. They cannot ask them. As for utep, ya, don't get me started on the place. They will go to the bridge and pick up the kids from over the border and offer nothing to the kids that live in town

Here's the thing. These folks (mostly) are simply trying to improve their miserable existances. They see that as their right.(so far, no argument) Where it all goes wrong is with this logic... those immigration laws are US laws, I'm not a US citizen, so they don't apply to me.
