BRIDGEPORT -- Even as they try to keep Staples in town, city officials say the office supply chain's decision to close its only city location is a sign of a healthy local economy.

Staples is shuttering its store in the Stop & Shop shopping plaza at 4543 Main St. in early January over a rent hike.

"(It's) an indication of the strength of that commercial corridor," said David Kooris, Bridgeport's head of economic development.

"It is the results of decisions made by the property owner to continue to upgrade the facility and attract new tenants and demonstrates that this is a primary retail destination for Bridgeport and the surrounding communities."

The plaza is a short drive from the Merritt Parkway and the Trumbull border.

Staples has been a tenant for more than 15 years.

The landlord, Brookside, based in Columbia, S.C., could not be reached for comment.

Kaitlyn Reardon, a spokesman for Staples, in a prepared statement, confirmed the January closure.

"We always evaluate our store performance to ensure we're operating the business in the best way," she said.

"We hope our customers in this area will continue to shop with us in our Fairfield and Stratford locations and online at ."

Kooris said his office is working with Staples to identify other locations within the city where they could continue to be a member of the retail community.

Paul Timpanelli, president of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, said he was not overly concerned with the news of Staples' possible departure.

"This is just indicative of the marketplace. There's a lot of competition out there.

The method of buying at a retail level is so much different than it was just a few years ago," Timpanelli said. "Brick and mortar options are not going to be as plentiful."

Despite the closing, he said there are still many options for Bridgeport residents, including W.B. Mason, OfficeMax and online stores.

"We might (even) be oversaturated with office supply operations," he said.

Don't tell that to Peggy Magidson, who frequents the North End Staples.

A senior with a disability, she recently signed a "Peace of Mind" contract with that store to have her computer repaired when necessary.

"That store has been there for years and I think it's something that's really necessary for people around here," she said. "There's all kinds of empty space in downtown Bridgeport. They could become an anchor store that could also help to bring business to downtown."

Councilwoman AmyMarie Vizzo-Paniccia, who represents the North End, was disappointed with the news.

"That store is always busy and helps to support the students, teachers, youth and every size business," she said.

No only that, you need to know what you want before you enter the store. If purchasing computer peripherals, you can be misled by a salesperson with no computer skills. I would never bring anything there that needed service,(not that I need to). I overheard an idiot salesperson BS a customer that was even dumber. If the guy knew anything about computers, he wouldn't be working there.
