OPINION: Full day kindergarten is a sound investment
As parents who want the best for our children and who are passionate about presenting them with every opportunity possible, we feel that the implementation of full day kindergarten is a sound educational investment - for both our children and the Town of Trumbull.

The Children's Defense Fund has been monitoring local and state education budgets over the last few months with a specific interest in student access to full-day kindergarten. I encourage all readers and decision makers to do two things:(1) read the Common Core State Standards that CT adopted which clearly defines the standards kindergarten children will be expected to meet and (2) read the information on the Children's Defense Full-Day K page http://www.childrensdefense.org/child-researc... . After reading information presented at these sites, consider what is best for the education of all children in your community. If the answer is a longer instructional day,use the collective wisdom of leaders and citizens to find a way to create and fund an instructional day for kindergarten that is the same length as first grade. Comparing student outcomes within and between states when some children have a 2.5 hour kindergarten day and others a 5 hour day of instruction just doesn't seem fair-Does it?
