BRIDGEPORT -- A city man spent Saturday morning in the hospital and then a jail cell after he attacked two off-duty detectives while attempting to rob them despite their warnings that they were cops.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the scene of an attempted robbery in front of Carmelina's Restaurant on Chapel Street. When an officer arrived, he found Bridgeport Police Officer Jarah Mathews-Dixon and detectives Christopher Borona and Daniel Domkowski detaining a man.

The man, Ubaldo Diaz, 54, of Main Street, had walked up to Borona and Domkowski as they were standing outside the restaurant where they were attending a retirement party. According to the police report, when Diaz demanded that the detectives hand over their belongings, they informed him that they were police detectives.

But Diaz didn't want to hear it. When his demands were not met, Diaz walked away and took a mop out of the trunk of a vehicle, police said. He used the mop to hit Borona in the left side of the face and Domkowski in the midsection, police said.

The officers then wrestled Diaz onto a car parked nearby and used Mathews-Dixon's handcuffs to detain him until the on-duty officer arrived. Borona and Domkowski declined medical attention, but Diaz was taken to Bridgeport Hospital after complaining of pain in his leg, arm and shoulder, police said.

A few hours later, Diaz was taken to police headquarters on Congress Street and charged with criminal attempt at third-degree robbery and two counts of assault on a police officer. His bond was set at $10,000.

"walked away", and walked back carrying a mop. On a city street. After he acted offensively toward the two idiots...

WTF did they think he was going to DO with the mop when he didn't go INSIDE with it?

Maybe they should have waited to see if he'd continue beating them OR go inside and start cleaning the place.

Shoot first, then take mop.
