I’m writing in regard to your series of articles on CTBoom.com about Connecticut politicians. I’d like to clarify some of the content in your post about Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch.

In your post, you identify Bridgeport as being the “fourth most dangerous city in the country.” The truth is that major crime in Bridgeport is down 20% so far in 2013. The “fourth most dangerous city” is a reference to an online publication, Business Insider, taking liberties with the FBI’s crime statistics that led to an inaccurate and incomplete analysis. An editorial written by the Hartford Courant actually called this study you are quoting,“so flawed as to be nearly useless.” Additionally, during Mayor Finch’s tenure as Mayor, more than 50 new police officers have been hired.

In addition to his focus on public safety, Mayor Finch has worked hard to, in your words,“restore” Bridgeport. Thanks to Mayor Finch’s focus on economic development, Bridgeport’s population has grown for the first time in 60 years. Additionally, the tax base continues to grow: Bridgeport’s 2012 Grand List grew by $63 million. Development at Steelpointe Harbor is moving forward, with Bass Pro Shops committed to opening a 150,000 square-foot mega outdoor destination store in Bridgeport that will be the company’s first outpost in the New York metro area and will attract millions of visitors each year.

As a result of Mayor Finch’s vision for a downtown neighborhood that is focused on attracting young professionals, the 06604 zip code is now ranked second in the region for most “20-somethings.” Downtown is home to several new restaurants, along with arts and cultural venues that attract visitors from throughout the region.

Both the Ballpark at Harbor Yard and Webster Bank Arena are great assets to the city, and we thank you for mentioning them, but there are so many more attractions located in Bridgeport that you failed to mention. Here’s a brief list I’ve compiled for you:

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo – the state’s only zoo
Seaside Park – home to one of the largest beaches in the state
The Adventure Park at Discovery Museum – the first of its kind in Connecticut, with five acres of rope-climbing park in the air
Fairchild Wheeler Memorial Golf Course – the only 36-hole public golf course in Fairfield County
The Bijou Theatre – one of the oldest movie houses in America has been beautifully restored to become a premiere destination for independent films and live entertainment

I hope you’ve found this information useful and have a better understanding of Mayor Finch’s accomplishments. If you have any questions or would like to know more about Mayor Finch and the City of Bridgeport, please let me know.

Best regards,

Elaine K. Ficarra

What does Seaside Park, Beardsley Zoo, golf course and theater restoration have to do with crime? These are all political accomplishments and have nothing to do with the SOCIAL aspect of the city which is the real basis for crime, not because parks, zoos or golf courses look nice!
Crime is supposedly "down" probably due in part to the fact that shooters and druggies are either dead, incarcerated or hiding out.
The Mayor still has to deal with the social issues and attitudes of the city's people.

Excellent comment.
There is an old saying that we can apply to all marketers; "Don't piss on my feet and tell me it's raining".

Bridgeport ..Attracting a higher class of addicts and muggers..population increasing due to illegals..crime down as illegals afraid to report it or are commiting it...06604 cheap flops for the rich kids that are doping and drunk.oH but they are "artsy" that excuses them and their actions..The only safe area of Bridgeport is the BAR that the mayor is currently in with his bodyguards..
