BRIDGEPORT -- A Superior Court judge on Wednesday ordered Paul Vallas to immediately vacate his job as superintendent of schools.
Ruling that the residents of Bridgeport deserve a qualified superintendent of schools, Judge Barbara Bellis dissolved the stay that kept Vallas in his job pending an appeal. Bellis, who last month issued the decision that deemed Vallas unqualified, said there will be less harm to the city if Vallas left now rather than staying in the job until an appeals court can rule.
A suit was filed by Carmen Lopez, a retired Superior Court judge, claimed Vallas had not taken the school leadership program required by the state to become a superintendent for the state's largest city.
Vallas completed an abbreviated program created just for him at the University of Connecticut. Bellis ruled that his shortened program did not meet the requirements under the law.
Vallas has led some of the nation's largest school districts but did not have the mandated certification to hold the job under Connecticut state law.
