An electrical problem filled the cellar of the Board of Education's downtown offices with smoke, forcing a brief evacuation of the building Monday.

City Assistant Fire Chief Ivan Fossegurani said firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the basement of the Board of Education's administrative offices at Main and Bank streets at about 4 p.m.

Responding crews found the building's basement filled with smoke and, after searching for its source, determined it to be the result of a malfunctioning electrical box, Fossegurani said.

A city electrician cut power to the box while firefighters used fans to clear the smoke from the basement, he said.

The smoke did not result in any injuries or damage to the building, Fossegurani said.
