Please! He is far too concerned with "rehabilitation". He needs to be worried about putting more people in jail. Jim Powell is the one who should have been put in as judge. As usual, the "good old boy" mind set of the county commission took over and we the citizens got their buddy. He is a nice guy, but we need a man who isn't scared to dish out punishment.

I have to agree. The "buddies" stick together a little too much for my liking. It makes me wonder if the county needs an audit.......

AMEN!!!!!!!!!! I was in Court one day and he was more interested in telling them about his church and the drug program they offer and the counseling they offer. What happened to not bringing religion into the Court? Judge Smith needs to go if he can't separate the two. BTW: Isn't that like against the law or civil rights or something? I'm not real up on the laws but I could have sworn there was a problem with that in a court setting?

Well Dismayed you apparently don't know what a good Attorney is. Jim Powell IS the best for the job. Don't know what you heard or if you were even in the right court but I see Jim Powell in court every time he is in there and he IS a good Attorney.

Jimmy Smith IS the right man for the job. The past judges all worked the same way and look..nothing changed. There all always the same people getting into trouble and nothing is changing. It was time for a change and Mr. Jimmy is giving it to us. Jimmy Smith is the most caring, most honest, and the most compassionate person that my family has ever met. He has always done what he thinks is right for Obion County and its citizens. Those of you who have bad things to say about him apparently dont know him and have only met him under bad terms..in court! Jimmy Smith is a good man..he has outstanding morals and a incredible love for God..there is not a single thing wrong with that. Obion County is a much better place since Mr. Jimmy was elected General Sessions judge. Give him a chance and I think everyone will see a positive change in our community.

I was questioned by mr Powell, I was not impressed, he did not have a good speaking voice in the court. I also have been the court on several other occasions, and watched the clients he was representing, who happened to be a bunch of men with no job, way behind on their child support, one went to jail.. no I'm sorry he isn't my choice of attorney, he might be fine for others but not me. Besides I want a lawyer who is seasoned, one with plenty of experience, Mr Powell is a newer lawyer in obion county, with less than 10 years of experience.

Lmao, I have won each case I have had in aObion county court , 4 so far, and Powell wasn't my attorney, to each his own. He was my opponents atty 3 of those 4 times and he lost for him. You can only shine a turd so much, a lawyer is only as good as his client, as the saying goes. I agree Religion has no place in the courtroom , it's place is home and church.

It's interesting that you say AMEN right after bringing up religion in the courtroom.
FYI...I believe "his church" only offers a meeting place for the drug program. I don't think it's an actual part of their services or anything. It's probably no different than the AA meeting at the Episcopal Church in U.C.
Just out of curiousity...are you against support groups that reach out to help people that need to or want to change their lives? Or are you just trying to make small talk and stir the pot a little?

Don't get me wrong: I think Jim Powell's great, but a good attorney does not necessarily make a good judge. I also sincerely doubt that you've followed him to every case he's ever been to. In fact, I've been in court with him several times when the only people present were the parties and the attorneys.

I know Powell and he is a really good man and lawyer, and helps people even if they don't have the money to pay him, me for one. As far as Smith goes, well I didn't know him till he had to deal with a situation with my daughter and her soon to be ex and he did an awful job. All he was worried about was if he, the ex, knew that he had to give his guns to someone else since he had an order of protection, then gives him 2 months to do it and in the mean time lets him get around the kids. Now that was a bad move and has put the kids in danger because of the man's temper. In fact, since the court date, he got mad at his "girlfriend" because he caught her in a car with someone else and rammed his car into the other boys with them in it and went to jail, but he still gets to take the kids off with him. This is why we have so many abused children and children getting killed because some judges, like SMith, think no matter what the parents should get to see their kids even if it is putting them in danger.
So, needless to say after this little time in court with him, and it's not over we still get to go back to make sure he did give his guns to someone else, which is a joke, and see how he handles it this time. Hopefully, with the ex going to jail during this time, he will see how bad of a temper he has and make him have supervised visits till he gets it under control. My concern is for the kids, not the adutls. I'll be back after the next court date and see if my opinion has changed, and I hope it does.

I was recently informed of some disturbing information judge smith is telling those before "his court", that if they can afford bond, they can afford a lawyer and one will not be appointed to them. That point blank is againest the law! In most cases family members bond someone out, not the person themselves. When miranda rights are read, part of the rights state if you cannot afford a lawyer one will be appointed to you. Yes we should all avoid court and getting in trouble, put we all have what are supposed to be inaliable rights. This is unacceptable and needs to be reported to the state. One of my good friends said, this is what her son was told by Judge Smith, this person never lies and I fully believe it. Has anyone else had this experience. I am afraid others rights are being violated.

Judge Smith is correct. And this is the policy of practically every court in TN. If one makes a bond of $10,000.00, there is no reason to make the taxpayers pay for a lawyer for that criminal. He obviously has access to money. Taxes are too high as it is. What are you thinking?

I am thinking about the LAW, IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD AN ATTORNEY ONE WILL BE APPOINTED TO YOU! Most folks are bonded out by an accumulation of family members. If they have 10,000 on their own, fine I could see Judge Smith's opinion. How many times is someone bailing themselves out?? I am all for punishment for crime, but someone will have a lawsuit later on, or worse a case could be overturned over on a higher level, for denial of a Public defender, think about that. A rapist , murderer or child molester could be let out on a violation of rights.
