I attended the meeting that was held at TBHS last night regarding the epidemic of synthetic drugs here in Lincoln County. Did anyone else attend? What are your thoughts on the drug epidemic here in Lincoln County?

i found out recently that my child has been smoking the "fake marijuana". didn't find out until she had a terrible car accident and admitted she smoked it and blacked out while driving.

is this stuff still being sold here in LC?

and before everyone goes crazy telling me what a rotten parent i am--i will say that we have always stressed to our children to NOT do drugs--synthetic or otherwise. we are middle class. we live in a very nice home in a very nice subdivision. we both work full time. we have been married over 20 years. these drugs can tempt any child--low income, divorced family, unemployed, trailer living folks, middle class like us, or even the upper class who swear their child would never do anything like that. it DOES happen and these places that are selling this crap need to be shut down.

please share what you learned at the meeting! I wish I would have known about it!

Well, maybe you need to pay attention a little more. The meeting notice was published in the LCJ for the past 3 weeks, you received either an email, automated phone message or both from the school district about it, there was a mailing from the school district to your home address and it was advertised on Fox 2 news as recently as Sunday night.

The only thing not done for you was to pick you up and take you to the meeting.

In other words, pay attention.

Maybe you should not be such an ass. I DID NOT receive e-mails, messages, etc., from the school because my daughter graduated last year. I work 50+ hours every week, have had a death in the family, an injured daughter, and haven't even had time to sit down and read the newspaper or watch tv in weeks.

Thanks for nothing.

You have time to surf the net, but you don't have time to pay attention?
Excuses are like azzholes...everyone has one and they all stink.
If your childs "habit" is now news to you, perhaps you should pay more attention.
Thanks for playing

I guess all I can hope for is to be as perfect and wonderful as you some day. Excuse me for asking a question. I should have known better than to try to get a serious answer here.

Yes, this is the problem. Too many iin this community are clueless, ignorant (literally), lazy, irresponsible and preoccupied with their own self-gratification.

Vandalism of public property and the parents say it's not their fault. Schools dealing with unresponsive parents expecting the school to feed and raise their kids. Parents giving their kids drugs at a hotel, a state rep that wants guns for everybody including convicted felons. AND carry on public transportation.

It's no wonder this place has problems......

I went and it was informative. Well put together. They have a facebook page. Its like DART Lincoln County. I have not been on it yet, but if you punch that up in a search engine, you should be able to find it. They also said something about having a meeting tonight for Silex at the High School at 7 pm and then one next week in Winfield, but I dont remember when. You may be able to catch one of those.

given the recent episode of mom letting daughter do drugs at the local hotel, it doesn't seem to me that this is rocket science, people. Apparently, it starts at home. Ever try telling your kids that doing drugs is not acceptable on your household? I did. No problem.

Prevention does start at home, but sometimes peers have influence on your children that you can not control. Everyone on this forum, so matter how self righteous they are, has a family member, or a friend who has a loved one that is affected by addition. It may be drugs, or alcohol, but NO ON IS IMMUNE to the problems. Not by how much you make, or how religious you are. Addiction can only be treated when the person has decided to stop. But keeping involved with your children Is a great approach to keeping them from peer pressure. Sports, family dinner, helping with homework, and spending time with them is where it starts. Communication is key. Good luck!

This is just symptomatic of a community with MULTIPLE problems at MULTIPLE levels. Economic, social, cultural ALL play a part in what ails this county. The drug issue is just another indication if how far these issues reach!

get your priorities straight. First is family dinner, then helping with homework, spending time with them, and lastly extra-curricular such as sports, band, show choir.

Oh look, I did misspell dialogue, I apologize for that.

I have one child, age six, he's getting ready to complete kindergarten. We just moved to Lincoln County a year ago, from O'Fallon. I had no idea the drugs were so bad here. I knew about the epidemic of heroin in St. Charles county, but only because I worked in the Substance Abuse field. I had heard bits and pieces about the 'new' synthetics that had been surfacing but not a whole lot. I had no idea that they were such an issue or that they were nearly as dangerous as they are.

I agree that drug use and addiction does NOT discriminate. No matter what class you are, no matter where you live, no matter how much time you spend with your children or how much you tell them that drugs are bad. It's everywhere. And, as they stated at the meeting, the only thing that will curtail it is a combination of education, treatment, community involvement and law enforcement.

Instead of pointing fingers here, we need to be banning together to educate each other- parents, children, teachers, family and friends. No one is immune from this epidemic just like no one is immune from cancer- you can do everything possible to keep yourself healthy and live without toxins, but cancer does not discriminate.

To anyone looking for help and other resources: try doing a Google search of your local Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or Al-Anon chapters in the area- we have all three here in Lincoln County. If there is anyone interested in speaking to me one-on-one, I have a boat-load of information to share. You may search for me on Facebook @ Sarah Faith Davis.

Good luck!!

Wow what a dialogue, one person ask for help and others toss up road blocks. A great read, real class.

no, not a dream world, just reality. Always, always, always make time for one family meal first was the best advice I ever received and never regretted that. Did we always manage to do that? No. But most of the time we did and not in front of the tv, either. We have wonderful discussions at the dinner table, what is going on in our lives, politics, current events, history, jokes, favorite food ideas, favorite beer, cars, etc. including fights.
