I'm hearing rumors of a 3rd grader bringing a gun to school. I'm not sure which day but apparently the rumor is that the incident was covered up. I never received a letter or any form of notification of it and I'm not sure if it even happened. Just curious if others have heard anything regarding it....

Yep, it was confirmed...but they're saying a Starter pistol is not considered as a firearm or weapon, based upon NC Statutes....
The parents of the rest of the kids were not informed of the incident. No phone calls, no letters sent home, nothing.... They didn't feel it was a situation where the children were in danger...

This whole incident is about to blow up! Many mistakes were made! Here's what the NC General Assembly classifies a "Starter Pistol" as: check out section 6..........

115C‑390.1. State policy and definitions.
(a) In order to create and maintain a safe and orderly school environment conducive to learning, school officials and teachers need adequate tools to maintain good discipline in schools. However, the General Assembly also recognizes that removal of students from school, while sometimes necessary, can exacerbate behavioral problems, diminish academic achievement, and hasten school dropout. School discipline must balance these interests to provide a safe and productive learning environment, to continually teach students to respect themselves, others, and property, and to conduct themselves in a manner that fosters their own learning and the learning of those around them.
(b) The following definitions apply in this Article:
(1) Alternative education services. Part or full‑time programs, wherever situated, providing direct or computer‑based instruction that allow a student to progress in one or more core academic courses. Alternative education services include programs established by the local board of education in conformity with G.S. 115C‑105.47A and local board of education policies.
(2) Corporal punishment. The intentional infliction of physical pain upon the body of a student as a disciplinary measure.
(3) Destructive device. An explosive, incendiary, or poison gas:
a. Bomb.
b. Grenade.
c. Rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces.
d. Missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one‑quarter ounce.
e. Mine.
f. Device similar to any of the devices listed in this subdivision.
(4) Educational property. Any school building or bus, school campus, grounds, recreational area, athletic field, or other property under the control of any local board of education or charter school.
(5) Expulsion. The indefinite exclusion of a student from school enrollment for disciplinary purposes.
(6) Firearm. Any of the following:
a. A weapon, including a starter gun, which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive.
b. The frame or receiver of any such weapon.
c. Any firearm muffler or firearm silencer.
The term shall not include an inoperable antique firearm, a BB gun, stun gun, air rifle, or air pistol.

There will be a Open School Board meeting held, Thursday, June 20th at Friendship Elementary School's cafeteria. I hope a lot of parents attend (we plan on being there) and I'm hoping many questions will be asked and answered. Things are not adding up here and we need to make our schools safe. From what I'm reading in the laws, the child should have been suspended and the parents should be held liable for the child bringing a gun....even if it was only a starter pistol

This meeting should only be for Friendship Students Family only. All these other people who have commented elsewhere, that are not affiliated with Friendship, should not be there. Space is limited in the cafeteria and parents will have a hard time getting in there if outsiders show up.

Anyone can attend. This effects all parents in Davidson county schools. They should know this will not be tolerated by any parents in Davidson county. To say only friendship parents indicates someone who wants it minimized.

As a parent of a Friendship student, this needs to be addressed with us. But I have many friends that are interested in learning what is going on because it is probably happening at all of our schools. I expect there to be a full house!

Everyone needs to be informed of what is going on but Friendship is one of the smaller elementary schools and they do not have the room to hold everyone who says they are coming. Let the ones involved with the school there first and if there is any room left over others can come in.

It has nothing to do with keeping quiet it is the size of the school and how many people it will hold.

My child attended Friendship and I was not notified by the school of the meeting. That really makes me feel like they do not want anyone to know about it.
