I couldn't help getting upset reading the article "Bill would favor kids of guards in hiring," regarding the bill filed that would give hiring preferences to the children of corrections officers killed on duty.
While it is tragic when it happens, it in no way means their children are qualified to do the same job. While all public- service jobs -- police, firefighter, corrections officers -- can be dangerous, what is also alarming is the incredible sense of entitlement that goes hand in hand with these jobs. Which is why considering the potential danger, these jobs are still highly coveted! It's akin to the average person winning the lottery.
The part of the article I found most upsetting was Jerry Flynn, executive director of the New England Police Benevolent Association, stating that "their children should receive some compensation as a result, and anyone who speaks in opposition is sour grapes." Really Jerry? Is it sour grapes for the taxpayers who foot the bill for the great pay, incredible benefits and the pension after 20 years to want someone qualified for the job? I don't know anybody in the private sector who can retire in their 50s.
I know, maybe we should ask Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, whose son was arrested for drunken driving after avoiding arrest at least once before, or Boston District Fire Chief Gerald Hogan, whose son Stephan Hogan, a newly hired firefighter still on probation who was arrested for heroin possession while on duty,
if being the child of public servant qualifies them to serve?

Okay, here we go with the educational part of the forum again. Civil service has had these rules in place for decades for cops and firefighters. It is called a "402A".
So the correctional officers should have it the same many years ago and now they are finally getting it.
You do not need any experience or education to become a firefighter, cop or correctional officer. You will be sent to the academy and get trained when you get hired. It does help if you have some background in the job you want though because it is alot of work to get certified in many titles that you will need for the job that you are mandated to achieve in your 1st year of employment
If a firefighter/cop dies in the line of duty or gets injured and disabled in the line of duty (402B) their son or daughter will be placed at the No.1 spot on any of their (3) choices of communities where they want to work. They do have to pass the civil service test or tests but do not need to have the highest score.
Obviously there are other preferences too. If the test taker is a vet, disabled vet and in some cases if the community still uses the residency preference and minority preference that they will also be hired before other candidates on a list.
So this is nothing new and already has been around for a long time and the correction officers should also get the benefit.

Now we will see who will take the test. Instead of being envious of the civil service employees and it is obvious you want their benefits you might as well take the next exam.
And I don't want hear "oh I don't want to be a cop or firefighter but I don't think they should get what they get" excuse either. If you didn't want their benefits then why complain? If you want their benefits then take the test.
Every occupation is different, im sorry but that is the way it is. Ask the "Google" technicians in California who get to play basketball or ping pong all day for $300K annually if they want to be cops or firefighters.
The problem is too many people compare their jobs to other jobs that are not even related in the same field.
