"Firefighters could not get a fire hydrant across the street to work right away so they funneled water stored on a few fire engines...We had a little problem with the hydrant, but that happens..."

I don't know about you but I can't wait to write that next check or Water and Wastewater with a 68% rate increase. You would expect a hydrant to work for that kind of cash.

The bolt on the top of the fire hydrant connects to a threaded stem (long rod) thats connects to a clapper valve at the bottom of the hydrant. The clapper is opened when the bolt on top of the hydrant is turned by a wrench thus allowing water to flow into the hydrant.

During the winter season the stem and clapper will become frozen because anti-freeze is no longer allowed to be used in the hydrant. Anti-freeze was a common additive up until a few years ago until the Feds banned it's use in hydrants.

With a frozen hydrant the stem cannot be turned to open the hydrant and if it is forced it will snap and break the stem (long rod) thus making the hydrant useless. So the hydrant needs to be gently persuaded back and forth until it becomes free to turn.

This is a common occurance now in all communties during the winter. Do your homework before riding the blame game wagon.

Job explaining the facts to someone who obviously just likes to complain. Oh, and that 68% increase is on the sewer and that's because our pant salesman of a mayor (Myflop) decided to ignore the feds and did nothing to update the storm water system.
