His brother was a beloved coach at Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington..........Pete Zamperini aka "Zamp" passed away approximately 2 years ago in his 90's. Residing in San Clemente, Cal., he still jogged 2 miles a day on the shoreline even at his advanced age.

Fred someone should check your head. This guy is all that is said about him. Maybe more! If you know anything about Service member's from that era. Many do not have service record's. Due to a huge fire at a storage facility in St. Louis. My Grandfather remained friend's with Louis until his death in 1999. Pretty sure my Pop would not fabricate a story. To make someone else look better. From a Marines perspective, i can tell you first hand. Many thing's are not for the record. So pay your thanks to this true hero!

What are the dicrepancies in his record there Fred ? Id be very careful calling BS on a veterans service unless YOU have served and can support your allegations with concrete facts.

Fred, you're a buffoon. Zamp has been featured on numerous TV shows, including "60 Minutes", which did a segment on him several years ago. The 60 Minutes producers did a thorough job of checking out his background to make sure that everything was legit.(I should know, I spoke with them.) Furthermore, the U.S. military flew him to Kwajalein about a decade ago to help find remains of American POWs who were murdered there. Sounds pretty legit, don't you think, Fred? I would strongly urge you to think for a moment before smearing a true hero with no evidence to support your lame claim.

This man IS a true hero! So, who are you anyway? some military reservist who got called to Iran and claimed a medical problem so you wouldn't have to go?! You need to have some of your records "checked out". May God bless Mr. Zamperini and others like him! Torrance is proud to have the airport named after a home boy hero!

About time! Nice looking sign. Maybe now people will stop calling it "Torrance Airport", LOL.

Congratulations Mr. Louis Zamperini, you are a true American hero and so well deserving of this honor. And to OLDTIMER, I remember "Zamp" (Pete Zamparini), he was at Banning when I attended school there.

Pete (Zamp) Zamperini was a true leader to all of us who had the honor to be on his teams, both track and cross country. I ran for him all 3 years at Banning High and Zamp was always an inspiration and a man who truly loved the sport of running. Zamp dedicated himself to train each and everyone of us in our event as well as guiding us through our days at Banning as a student. I really can't say enough about him, he was just a great individual and I am honored to have known him.
