I was acquainted with Rick, know the stairwell he died on, know where he often went to drink.

I noticed that when he was drinking, his judgment was not 100%. Often would play music in a loud and inappropriate fashion.

I have several family members and friends that are police officers. They all agree that not ALL police officers have the best interests of others as their major driving force for being police officers, but the majority DO.

I doubt that the police officers involved had their weapons drawn as the went up the stairs, just for a noise complaint. And, it would take them a few seconds for them to unholster their weapons, turn the safety off and fire.

As a side note, the notion of running back to the car, while already engaged, to get bean bag shotguns is silly, it all went down in seconds. And, there is NO police force that has a policy of meeting a deadly threat with maiming force, only deadly force.

The bottom line is that no matter what a kind, gentle, giving, loving, loved person Rick was, alcohol and guns / cars / kids / fire / explosives / anything else lethal, DON'T mix.

I am sad for the family and loved ones of Rick for their loss. I am equally saddened for the police officers involved. I seriously doubt either they nor Rick woke up that morning and thought that today would be the day that their life would end or they would end the life of another.

Actually- TPD likes to harass anyone who looks young, a minority OR NOT! As a FEMALE with no criminal record and the DAUGHTER OF A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER- I was STILL continually harassed by Torrance PD. Only when I mentioned my dad or my grandfather who worked for LAPD would they let up. Simply walking the 3 blocks from school *Torrance High* was enough to get lights flashed and asked for ID. I didnt dress like a "chola" or a thug type female. They just like to harass people. Its really that simple.

I have non-minority friends aka white people friends -as the majority of Torrance High students were white- and they too were harassed and still do get harassed. Its not just minorities- Torrance police picks on EVERYONE! Especially if you are young.

and FYI- my mother is half white, she married a white man and they too get harassed so they moved to Huntington Beach.(Which is much nicer and I havent had any problems when I visit) Torrance police are just a bunch of bullies. Not ALL but about 85% of them are just that.

As always, kid, you proclaim (and for some bizarre reason are proud of) your ignorance and, frankly, your own racism. I was working for civil rights around the time your *parents* were in grade school. And that was in the deep south! But don't let facts and reality stop you from sounding like a jerk.(By the way, your parents had guts, even so recently.)

I was stating actual stats- Im basing it off my own experiences. If you are so educated and know so much then you would've figured that out.

FYI- I work in a law office and Torrance PD is one of our clients. I know many of these bullies and how they get disciplined for being such idiots.

Also, no, my friends and I were not doing anything. Walking home after playing for the school's basketball team- in our warm ups- is not reason enough to be stopped and questioned yet we were. Leaving the track field after practice and walking through Wilson Park- is that enough to get harassed? Apparently so. We were A and B students who played sports and were on different school committees. We were never smart asses to the cops- not trying to get shot but notoriously trigger happy TPD. Smart guy- Im the DAUGHTER of a retired police officer. I know how to speak to authorities so dont assume we were smart asses or acting like punks. People like you are the reason my generation thinks so poorly of older generations. You have no idea what its like to grow up in OUR times yet we are constantly reminded of what you had to go through. Yes, we know! Yes we appreciate it because if it wasnt for your struggles we wouldnt have the freedoms we have now! BUT PLEASE FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!!!!! STOP THINKING WE ARENT STRUGGLING FOR SOMETHING OURSELVES!!! We have to grow up in a society where teenage pregnancy is normal, AIDS is widespread, police brutatility on the rise, gang violence within the schools themselves, our economy in recession, illiteracy is at an all time high, less funding for schools yet people wonder why kids arent learning and etc. We are losing music and sports programs at an alarming rate. Ive never assumed to know of your life and how you were treated so dont assume you know mine and the things I go through. My statements are based off my own personal experiences. I do take care of my disabled, retired father who was injured off duty. I also help my mother take care of my sister who has Down Syndrome.
