Just checking to see if anyone heard an incredible jet / torch like sound around 11:15 -11:25 on 08/26 In Redondo Beach..

I know the sound of jet, and planes that may take off or fly by due to LAX or Torrance Airport, but this sound was much louder and more instantly on and off... I have heard this sound before in the past, sounds almost like the torch in a hot air ballon if that's a better way of describing it. Anyhow if anyone has a clue please feel free to post.. I figure it was either Exxon / mobile plant or the power plant..

We heard the same noise and your description is dead on. Others on our block heard it too. We think it was steam release from the power plant. Maybe the DB can confirm. Thanks.

We heard it too. I figured it had something to do with the power plant too...pretty freaky noise to hear that late at night. Curious to hear more about what it is.

It was a steam release from the power plant. It happened once in July and once in June as well. Seems that when systems are malfunctioing the steam gets released. I read an article about it that made me a bit nervous but I suppose that as long as the safety release is in place we will be ok. I don't like living so close to that thing.

If you call the plant they will tell you what it is, however the person writing the article called during one of the steam releases and the person at the power plant said it was an emergency and they would have to get off the phone immediately.

If you do a google search about the plant seems that over the months there have been quite a few "glitches"

Yea, I heard it too and I live in Torrance.
I was so freaked out because it didn't sound like normal jet since the sound kept on coming and going. I was wondering the whole night whether it was aliens or something like that..

I heard it here in Redondo. I thought it might be military helicopters, but thought it could be some sort of steam valve- glad that is what it was, but not thrilled they are having emergencies!

So how do you Redondo Beach residents feel about all that jet noise controversy surrounding Naval Auxillory Landing Field Fentress, Naval Air Station Oceana and Chesapeake Regional Airport!?

So how would you people of California like to see Fort Pickett near Blackstone, VA become an outlying landing field for the U.S. Navy jets stationed at Fentress Field in Chesapeake, VA and Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA!?

Did anyone hear what sounded like a very low flying jet this morning (11/15/11) around 1:20am?

Last night my wife and I were woken up on four different occasions between 12am and 2am by four low flying commercial jets. We live in North Redondo Beach and rarely have aircraft fly so low especially so late at night. After doing some research, I'm thinking that at least two of them could have been Quantas flights out of LAX. Hopefully this isn't the beginning of a new trend.

Found this flight tracking website... very helful.

All the low flying flights were out of LAX. Took off Eastbound and adjusted to a Southwesterly course taking them right over our neighborhoods. They were fairly large jets so that didn't help the noise levels any. Noise complaint filed.

I just heard this noise tonight jan 27 2012 around
1:00am. Oh man was I freaked out. My bf said it was a plane flying low but than we kept hearing the loud noise over and over. I guess everyones saying its steam release I guess. I'm just relieved a plane wasn't coming down onto the neighborhood and that I found this article. Thanks everyone.

I just moved into the north redondo area. Is this frequent occurances - loud, low-flying jet sound late/early mornin hours? Steam release? Really? It sounds like plane flying low on its way to crash into the ground. How often does this happen? I've never heard this while living in south redondo. Why so late though....

I've heard three loud jumbo jets banking turns then, over north redondo and they were all between 12midnight and 0150. ive lived here about 10 months and havent had this much jet noise before that I have noticed,
