The articles written in the Tonopah Paper by Roberts focus on the 50's
and 60's. When he writes about athletics you would think the "Logan"
era was the only time athletics appeared at THS.
Rick Baxter was a great coach whom coached a great Tonopah Football
team to a last second heart-breaking loss in the state championship
game at Tahoe. The whole town seemed to be there. Tonopah had
more fans present then Tahoe had at the game. Tonopah finished
second that year at State but were first in many of the hearts of the
Metsher, Sheffield, Krammer, Eason, Barr, Tissue..........to name a
Argueabile the best team in the history of the school.
Rick coached the muckers to a victory over Virgin Valley which was a
double overtime victory. The loss was VV's first in 49 consectutive
victories in the Southern Zon League. A planned 50th victory
celebration for the locals in Mesquite was spoiled by the mighty
muckers and Rick Baxter!! A great article appeared in the Las Vegas
Sun (which generally covered only Vegas schools) regarding the
game "the writer calling it the best high school fooball game he had
Tonopah had great programs after the 50's and 60's , The Tonopah
Times needs to extend those tarticles beyond the "Logan" era
