Beachwood Mayor Ron Jones calls it quits
- Ronald W. Jones Jr. announced Monday that he will resign as the borough's mayor, bringing an end to four tumultuous years in office. In his announcement, Jones, 54, said his resignation takes effect Friday. "People question why nothing gets done in Washington," Jones said Monday. "It's because nothing gets done on Main Street. When people are so personally set on an agenda, nothing gets done, and it's very sad." In 2007, Jones unseated longtime Republican Mayor Hal Morris, becoming the second Democrat in the history to serve as the borough's mayor. But his term has been riddled with conflicts with other elected officials, public commentators and lawsuits from opponents. Even issues from Jones' personal life have garnered public scrutiny. However, Jones said he sees his mayoral term as mainly positive, as he leaves Beachwood for Toms River to continue government lobbying through a company he owns called Piquant Enterprises. Jones credits his positive attitude to changes such as focusing on the environment and improving transparency on contract bidding. Patricia Barndt, chairwoman for Beachwood's Democratic Committee, wrote in an email Monday afternoon that committee members were gathering to review the process for filling the vacancy. "I believe we will be selecting three candidates that will be submitted to the council, and they will choose one," she wrote. "We have some very good people interested in the position. Certainly one of them will be our qualified mayoral candidate, Bonnie Verga." Jones announced his resignation a day before the local primary election, in which Verga and Joel Balazinski compete to be the Democratic candidate for mayor. Ronald Roma, the Borough Council president, is unchallenged for the Republican nomination to run for mayor in November. Borough clerk Bette Mastropasqua confirmed she received Jones' resignation letter at 3:03 p.m. Monday, which cites personal and business obligations as the reason for his early departure from office. Jones said his plans include his son's high school graduation, his wedding and a run for Congress within the next few years. "My children need to grow, and they were kind of trapped in Beachwood. My son Ronnie (a registered sex offender) was used as a ploy to diminish my capacity as mayor," said Jones. "That's politics. I'm a big boy and I'll get over it. I hope in the future they don't stoop to bringing people's personal life into borough matters."

Ron Jones' son (the regestered sex offender) is the victim of sexual assault by his mother's (Kim Jones aka Kim Rommel) former affair while married to the former mayor. By Ron stating that it was used to diminish his capabilty as mayor is a farce! It was a cover up to excuse his former wife's behavior! These people are insane and there is still a question of the former mayor's wife in the death of her second husband. If Ron decides to run for congress I will personally make sure the pubic has access to this information and I have proof! Think about in carefully Mr. Jones and thank you former wife! May God help you if you had any involvement in Don's death! It will come out!!!

I would assume that the commentator above me is a family member of Don Rommel. I can personally tell you that Kim loved him to the moon and back. She cared for him until the bitter end and was heartbroken after his death. I remember Don as a strong and kind man who looked out for me. Kim Rommel had nothing to do with the death of Don. He was afflicted with a terrible disease that eventually took his life. I hope, for all of your sakes, that you have had the opportunity to do some healing since his death. By the way, no, you can't have the PSP back, ya bunch of animals!
