“I am so grateful for Shelter Rock because sometimes with ministry, it’s so hard to even know where to begin. Because of Shelter Rock it’s easy to be a part of ministry…they are enabling us to minister in such a huge way, a way that we wouldn’t be able to otherwise.”

-Shelter Rock Ministries Partner

“Sponsoring children through Shelter Rock has changed my life. I have been blessed financially and in just every area of my life. It’s just such a blessing to be involved.”

Karen M.
-Shelter Rock Ministries Sponsor

“I was so lonely and empty, but when I became a sponsor, that child…loving on someone else…it changed my whole life. It turned everything around. I have so much joy from giving to those children.”

Mary L.

“Shelter Rock is a powerful organization, they are professional. The thing that stands out to me is they care about people and that’s what it’s all about. They have real, genuine care for people.”

Derek K.

“When you come and actually see the little person that you have given so much to…that you can be a part of them as they grown up to love the Lord…that’s a true blessing.”

“When you’re talking about abject poverty and people who have never known hope, there’s a hope that comes from the Holy Spirit that when you’re loving on them…you see the return. You can just see it in their eyes. It’s powerful”

Jim A.
-Shelter Rock Ministries Sponsor

“Shelter Rock Ministries is needed. There are just so many people in need that we never dreamed of right through our own back door. The need is right here and we need to look at the people right here. I think we can touch so many hearts and lives.”

-Shelter Rock Ministries Volunteer

“The need here is so great. Just an hour up the road, just 30 minutes up the road living in just ‘not livable’ conditions. This is what the churches were built for; to help the needy…to give…to give to organizations like Shelter Rock Ministries that are going to put it in the right places, and give to the needy and minister to the needy.”

-Shelter Rock Ministries Volunteer

“Shelter Rock Ministries, what they are doing for the children is beautiful. It’s such an awesome work that God is performing through the volunteers and staff and partners. I know that our finances can help support what God has desired in His heart and shown and given passion to Shelter Rock Ministries so they can reach these people, and to show them that they are not poor, that the good news can carry to them.”

David A.
-Shelter Rock Ministries Partner

“Shelter Rock is so well organized and they are doing such a phenomenal job. We’re from South Carolina and we come up to the mountains to have fun, but it’s so easy to forget what’s going on in our own back yard. Shelter Rock helps them and they do it in this phenomenal, huge way.”

Victoria F.
-Shelter Rock Ministries Volunteer

“Here in the United States, everyone should be provided for…they should have those basic needs and that love. We have to provide it here. No one else will come in to help us. Our children here are so important to us and we just have to focus here in this country as well.”

Carla J.
-Shelter Rock Ministries Volunteer

“I’ve been looking for outreach, and this is a ministry that’s all about outreach. It is clearly touching people, bringing them to Christ and it’s a beautiful thing.”

In an effort to fight poverty in Harlan County, Shelter Rock Ministries, of Boone, N.C., distributed food, clothing, toiletries and toys to approximately 200 people on Saturday at the Harlan Center.

Steven Reese, founder of Shelter Rock Ministries, said the purpose of their ministry was to care for those who needed a little assistance to make ends meet. Reese said they distribute approximately 50 tons of items per month year round.

“We travel through the Appalachian mountains from Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee and western North Carolina,” said Reese.“We have about 5,000 children that we provide food and gifts to, as well as their families here in Appalachia. It’s non-stop for us. We love Harlan County. We’ve been coming here about six or seven years now, and it’s one of my favorite places to come to.”

Jack Owens, a member of Shelter Rock Ministries, said they loaded up two semi-trucks with distributions for the Harlan area. Owens said they have a praise and worship service and afterwards they provide fun and games for the children.

“We call it a day of blessings,” said Owens.“We have the cars line up and have a drive through to distribute the items needed by the families here today. We try to come every six weeks to the Harlan area.”

Nellie Farley, of Closplint, said she looks forward to Shelter Rock coming to Harlan. Farley said it’s hard to make ends meet on a fixed income, so these distributions are a big help to her and her family.

“I have two small children and an older child,” said Farley.“Me and my husband greatly appreciate the help we receive. I love the singing and day of fun and games for the kids.”

Reese said they were providing Christmas gifts for the children on this trip. He said their warehouse was in Boone, N.C. and they always have numerous contributors. He said Avon was a big donator this trip with lots of personal items for men and women.

“We, at Shelter Rock Ministries, receive great joy from the smiles we see on the faces of the children and the words of gratitude from the parents,” Reese said.

Shelter Rock is currently providing life provisional food, dental care, and Christian education with the Love of Jesus Christ to impoverished children throughout the Appalachian Mountains and the Native American Reservations of the North West.

Poverty is no respecter of persons and these children are innocent victims. Shelter Rock is an inter-denominational 501-c3 non-profit organization that serves children living in isolation and poverty within America. When children of poverty are joined through sponsorship with another, their future brightens with hope for a better tomorrow.

The lives of Shelter Rock children contain some of the most fertile soil for sowing through sponsorship, partnership, prayer, and financial gifts. Please join us in changing their lives forever with the giving Love of Jesus Christ.
