Assault rifles can only be owned with a proper federal license. What the prez is trying to ban is the civilian knock offs. They look like the real think, but they aren't fully automatic. And the Sandy Hook shooter didn't even empty his mags, so whether he had 30 or 10 round mags wouldn't have stopped him. A person could inflict much more damage and fear upon an area as a sniper shooting 1 target at a time than a mass shooter. The ban will do nothing.

The only thing this ban will do is turn millions of currently legal gun owners into felons.

Well, the military does't use the Bushmasters, which are at the heart of all of this

D@mmit! All of us grieve for the people that have lost their lives (by any method of murder) to evil people. I have four children at home and get both angry and sad when I think of the children killed in Connecticut. I am also still very angry and sad when I see the stories on 9-11-01 when the towers fell and when I see the photo of the crying firefighter carrying the dead child out of the ruins of the blasted federal building in Oklahoma City.

There are evil people in our society. Whether or not they have guns is irrelevant. Everybody needs to recognize this. Regardless of whether these bad people use guns, ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel, box cutters, or whatever, they will find some tool to perform the evil that they want to do. Infringing on the rights of the law-abiding owners of guns, box cutters, and/or fertilizer & diesel fuel will not fix the problem.

In the case of the recent shootings, I fully believe that a single armed and trained security guard or off-duty police officer at any of these places where these horrible massacres took place would have either stopped the incident from happening or given enough time to both evacuate the premises and have a prompt response by area police. Armed, trained air marshals and TSA officials have been very effective since 9-11 and the same would hold true in our schools. Iíll bet the violent crime rate is far lower at stores with armed security guards or moonlighting police officers stationed therein than those without.

Gun control attempts are nothing but a political sideshow to make the public feel as if someone is in control, all the time side stepping the true core problems of a failed mental health system, lack of control of the video game industry, and overall decline of morality in general.

I have never heard or seen any soldier use a semi auto Bushmaster. They use the M-16 or M-4 with burst option. They make airsoft weapons that look like an M-4. Should we ban those too? Just because it looks like an assault rifle, doesn't mean it is.

When I read your comment about jokingly banning airsoft weapons it reminded me of a story in the news yesterday. A 5 y/o girl in PA was suspended 10days from school because she told a classmate she easing going to shoot her with her Hello Kitty Pink bubble making gun. It is freaking ridiculous.

I understand a zero tolerance policy on weapons, but they need a clear definition of what a weapon is. A toy is not a weapon. They need to have a separate rule that applies to toys, that aren't as severe as the weapon rule. And a 5 year old doesn't understand what's going on in our society right now.

That is the problem with zero tolerance policies, it removes all common sense. I was in court recently for a traffic violation and an older clean-cut man was in court for carrying concealed weapon on school grounds, of course my mind went straight to something terrible, but as he explained to the judge, he had stopped to pick his kid up and forgot to take his pocket knife out of his pocket before entering the school and because of a zero tolerance policy the resource officer charged him with it.

I can see a no knife policy for the students, but charging a parent is ridiculous. I went to the Veteran's Day event at Parkway this year, and just about every veteran there had a knife clipped in their pocket. I even remember carrying a knife when I went to Watauga. It wasn't a big deal then.

when you take an AR-15 to your unit armorer and he changes out the trigger group and bolt carrier it is now classified as an M-16. I carried one for several years in the service that had AR stamped out and M-16 stamped in its place.

the countries national guard units and marines use bushmasters more than any other branch of service since colt the actual owners of the M-16 model are over priced pices of crap. it takes less than 30 minutes to convert it from semi to the 3 round burst. The exact model the military uses

You understand wrong. This was one of the first reports that were given. The media was giving out info before they had the facts. The bushmaster was the primary weapon. He used 30 round clips and "jyngle taping" so that he could change out the clips faster. According to the coroners report, all the children were pretty riddled with bullet wounds. The coroner stated that the bushmaster was the primary weapon. The shooter did kill himself with a handgun. If you believe these first reports, you probably think that wrestling is real and tglhe moon landing was faked.
