Frostbite?? Hypothermia?? Inside a building? In order to get frostbite, the temperature has to be below 32 degrees. Are the schools really colder than 32 degrees inside? Don't they have a heating system? How did they warm the buildings on Tuesday, when it was 17 degrees and OK to have school?
I'm talking about OUTSIDE, not inside.(Well, some schools are very cold inside until heat kicks in....but not enough to affect homeostasis). Either way, just smile and deal with it. Life is too short to complain about a delay! Enjoy some extra time with your child if you can. It is not easy on anyone to have to make days up or readjust schedules, but everything will be alright.

Life does go on. I would much rather put my kids on the bus on a nice warm and sunny spring day than on one of these windy days. Plus, bitching about it won't get those days back.

If you don't want your kids standing in the cold for the bus or are concerned if the bus can even start and more, how about trying a very innovativ and cutting edge concept - get off your butts and drive them to the school! I've lived in areas that get far colder and more snow and ice and kids don't miss half the time the Watauga County kids do.

That's a great idea if you have a cushy life and don't have to work. Evidently you live a life of ease and have someone to keep u up. Or your on welfare and don't work and have plenty of time. Real people have to work and their schedule does not allow them the convienence of taking their kids to school. Besides, that just adds to the carbon footprint.

Joe, no tough stories, to the contrary, this is about how too many in the High Country are conditioned to throw the panic switch when actual winter weather shows up. I'm not talking record setting weather, but regular snowfall and cold temps. Folks here are supposed to be so hearty, mountain living, etc. More like Pavlov's Dog watching Rays Weather channel for closure announcements. I've lived outside of Chicago and St. Cloud, Minnesota where real Winters hit, even the small communities don't shut down like what I've witnessed here for the past 6 years.

Paul, so you're essentially saying that ensuring your kids get to school isn't worth the carbon footprint. Interesting priorities on child rearing. My wife and I both have white collar careers, ASU and Watauga Medical Center, respectively, and put in 50+ hours per week. Guess what, we've juggled things so the kids are driven to/picked up from school daily and we get to work on time.

Lifegoeson - originally you said it was cold inside the schools and kids will get sick. Someone pointed out that illnesses are caused by viruses and bacteria.

You replied that you were concerned about hypothermia and the outside temperatures. Earlier posters had shown that the temperatures increased 2 degrees on one day to make it OK to have school and the next day they delayed at the same temperature as the day before when they had school.

So, I assume you think school should be canceled whenever the temperature is below 20 degrees?

You replies seem very inconsistent.

Cool story. Not everybody up here has flexible hours, so the bus is the only option. And we're not prepared like the folks are in the Midwest.

Here we are again. Its 22 here in todd. The snow fell yesterday and the roads were scraped. No one scraping today.

The roads are gonna be the same at 9 as they are at 7.

School has been held when it was much colder.

So, the reason for the delay?
