GS 20-157 states that you must yield to an EMERGENCY VEHICLE that is displaying proper light and audible signal. NC law defines an EMERGENCY VEHICLE as motor vehicle that:

A vehicle owned and operated by a police department or by the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety including the State Highway Patrol or by the Wildlife Resources Commission or the Division of Marine Fisheries and used exclusively for law enforcement purposes, or by the Division of Emergency Management, or by a fire department, either municipal or rural, or by a fire patrol, whether such fire department or patrol be a paid organization or a voluntary association, vehicles used by an organ procurement organization or agency for the recovery and transportation of human tissues and organs for transplantation, and every ambulance or emergency medical service emergency support vehicle used for answering emergency calls.

GS 20-130.1 gives authority to volunteer firefighters (as well as some other people) the authority to have and use red lights. Sirens and other audible warning devices are restricted to department Cheifs and Assistant Cheifs.

Please point to the statute that says you gave to yeild to personal vehicles with red lights. And I would never yeild to a reckless driver, lights or not.
Bob what does "you gave to yeild" mean?
That sounds Walmart to me!

I respect the military and am thankful for the men and women that are on the front lines. People have different callings and different ways of making a difference. I guess having a bachelors degree in emergency management classifies me as an uneducated redneck even though i am on a rural fire department. The comments you have made Bob are uneducated and ridiculous. When you supposedly get run off the road do you think that someone is hurt or needing help? No all you think about is yourself! You need to humble yourself and appreciate local emergency personnel for the good things that they do.

Audible sirens are not permitted on personal vehicles. Since a vehicle needs lights AND sirens to be classified as an emergency vehicle, personal vehicles with red lights do not qualify. Volunteers are also required to obey all traffic laws, including speed limits. And a simple typo doesn't mean bad grammar.

While Bob may be approaching this the wrong way, he is right in some ways. Personal vehicles with red lights are not emergency vehicles. They are supposed to follow all traffic laws. That means no speeding, no running red lights, and no passing. I see this happen a lot. All I can do is call the Chief, but nothing ever changes. It seems to be worse on the west side of the county.

Bob seems to hate all emergency personnel, be it law enforcement or fire/rescue. He does everything he can to discredit them on every topic possible. I'm sure there's either a sob story or just blatant disrespect somewhere there.

We have a duty and responsibility as citizens do disobey any form of authority. Rise up!

I'd like to know where Bob does his driving. I've lived in Watauga Co. for most of the last forty years, and I've never been run off the road by a first responder or any other emergency vehicle.

So, because we have different opinions, that makes me wrong? And how is my opinion wrong?

Oh. I see. Since YOU have never been run off the road, it must never happen.

Speed does not equal "good." His grammar and misuse of the English language would embarrass a middle school teacher.

I can wade through the grammar and spelling mistakes to get the gist of the story. I like getting the story sometimes days before the Democrat.

You know I read through this. Steve Frank is a terrible reporter. A fatal wreck happened literally a minute or two in front of me, and when I came thru no medic personnel or officers had been able to respond, he's there taking pictures and gets one with the deceased slumped over the steering wheel, and POSTS it! He's worthless and I'm glad he's no longer with the station. My brother even was in a wreck and just had turned 16. Yeah it was his fault because he pulled out in front of the guy, but he posted pictures of his truck and put his name in the article against my families wishes. Said we didn't have a right to determine that. HE IS A MINOR. I just hate Steve Frank

Public record is just that. I do believe he crossed the line when he posters the pic of the deceased.(I never saw it, but I've heard it enough to believe it) Anyways, it's common for pictures of accidents to be posted with news articles. It's more of a rarity up here, not because the media sources take the higher road like they claim, but because they don't have the staffing and/or desire to get out from behind the desk. I have noticed a significant change in GoBlueRidge.net reporting lately. Less to do with local things, and more stories from out of the area. It's kind of disappointing...
