it was easter weekend in 1970, not 1969,put on by the same people who put on woodstock. it was originally planned for south florida but changed at the last moment to bithlo. rolling stone has a story about it you should check out. by the way i was there and since then have met and played music with tin house member, floyd radford.

Yep it was Easter. I went down with some friends. Are there any photo galleries of the festival?

I agree, it was Easter weekend 1970. Went down from Greenville,NC with a big group of friends. The highlight was Johnny and Edgar Winter on stage playing together. Amazing! One funny memory was at one point the police or some officials started saying the festival wasn't going to start or continue like they expected us to pack up and leave. We were already totally into the event by that time, if you know what I mean, and we looked around at those thousands of people partying and cracked up with laughter because we knew there was nothing stopping this party! Wish there were some photos or videos somewhere online.

There used to be a guy with a gallery out there, but I'll be damned if I can find it. I've tried to send something to his e-mail but it's bounced. I had made contact with him some years ago about getting more pix, but he never followed through.

I remember driving to the site and seeing the Allman Brothers hanging out by the Holiday Inn or some motel. The only band I remember was a local band called Dr. Fox... the rest of the festival is a blur... and I was only 16...

mountain was there allman bros, tin house a local band of teens that was offered a contract from Johnny winters manager as they left the stage. lead guitar player Floyd Radford later played in both Edgar and Johnny Winter bands. Buddy Guy was there and never got to play. At the time Bithlo was still un-incorporated and had no police force , so the Orange County cops snuck in with an ambulance and were surprised that they were out numbered and had to leave and wait for people to leave before any arrests could be made. Orlando Sentinel paper had a few days of coverage with pictures

Wow, I also went to winters end rock fest. I got there early in the week and help build the stage.
There was no crane to lift up the speakers so we had to build step scaffolding to elevate them to the towers we erected. Great concert, Johnny Winter put on of the greatest performances I have ever seen. Tin roof electrified the audience. Got a whole bunch of great memories and good times. I managed to stay straight thru the whole thing. It was the first time I met Wavey Gravey from the Hog Farm. What a dedicated dude. Got a load of pictures someplace.

I was there with two other friends from Clayton, NC. Allman Brothers & Johnny & Edgar Winter, and Tin Roof....If anyone has any pictures please contact me at: tobaccoroadrock@hotmail.com
We had tickets for Winter's End - Heard it was cancelled on the drive down from NC and were directed by radio station to this show. We were pictured holding our tickets to "Winters End" in our hands in Orlando Sentinel. Their online archieve does not go back that far.
Any help much appreciated.

Wow.. i just looked this up.. i worked security through Sal Santoro's connections.. i did the back-stage organizing and staging.. Johnny Winter was having some 'issues'.. he went on stage while Mountain was still playing.. but, it worked-out..
The "Me and my Buddy" Acid was plentiful and some vintage Orange Sunshine and Green Oz was available.. it was the first place i saw 'blotter acid'..
It started falling apart by mid-day Saturday when money-issues and a 'Motorcycle Club' got tangled-up.. there were questions about who was getting paid..
Al-in-all the people were excellent, the front gate had some problems, but i was far from that situation.. it turned-out to be a great camp-out, good music, and some foggy but good memories..

I found Wallace Rollins, but he only has 2 or 3 pictures and the old gallery doesn't show up. I have one of the stage from where I was sitting, but it's horrible. I heard a rumor somewhere that it was filmed ala Woodstock. Would LOVE to see that footage.

I too found this blog today looking up Johnny Winter after his death. I also was at "Winter's End". Very young and VERY inexperienced. It was the very first place this young teen had ever seen a naked girl in the flesh...lol! I was hooked to say the least...LOL! I too wish there were more photos or movies out there. I found one 8mm movie on You Tube. That's it. Johnny was great. After an afternoon concert he sat on the edge of stage and just talked with us. Nice guy. Sorry he's gone...

We drove down from NJ. I remember Sweetwater played. For me, the highlight was Johnny Winters playing with the Allman Brothers.

I was there and recall much of it. Previous posts are fairly accurate. Wavy Gravy--what a dude. I shelled peanuts with him for a big hunk of the afternoon. Served brown rice on leaves of lettuce... Tunes were great. HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE? Any guesses?

I was talking to my uncle tonight and he told me how my father was legal counsel for the festival and he was the carpenter. He said the Mob took 1/2 the door and someone on the local government side took the other half. All the promoters were arrested near the end of the festival when they tried to leave. But, then he also said as EVERYONE left the authorities went on a spree. They got out by taking a rental car up to Tallahassee to fly from there.
