three strange men

[Resident of Oak Forest]

A black van parked in front of my house today and three men wearing a turban like hat rang my bell. My mom answered the door and they asked her if she was Muslim. she said no, they looked down and saw a statue of the virgin Mary that we have right by the door. they just turned around and walked back to the car and drove away. I thought this incident was very strange. they didn't stop at any other houses. Did anyone else get approached by them in Oak Forest?
This incident made me very uncomfortable. What if they were scoping out the place?

I would have answered also. How the heck do you live your life if your afraid to answer the door. I see Latinos from certain churches go to the Latino families on my block but no others. Don't know if this is the case but how will you know if you don't answer the door. I have not hear of Muslims going door to door. Is your family dark skinned? Call the police next time. It doesn't appear to be a crime but they should know about it and they may have an answer for you.

No we are not dark skinned. I never heard of muslims going door to door either. You are right, I should let the police know in case its happening on other streets.

Be careful if you choose to not answer the door. I just read an article a couple of days ago about a theft ring that was broken up. They would ring doorbells during the day, and if no one answered they would break in and steal whatever they could. If someone did answer, they would make up a story about being lost and ask for directions.

I think it was a made up story and it never happened.

What ever; there have been many crimes that has happened when a person keeps you busy at the Front door or yard when, the 2nd person enters and robs them.
Especially for the elderly , when the weather is mild and all doors and windows are open.

"Gypsy scams" are when a person comes to your front door and another goes around the back or asks to use the bathroom while the 1st guy preoccupys the homeowner. They usually say they are from a utility company or roofer and it's usually done to the elderly. Run of the mill burglars hit in the day time when nobody is home, or they think there's nobody home. They will ring or knock then go to the back if there's no answer. If you do not respond they may think there's nobody home and kick in your rear door while your inside. You don't have to open your your door. Yell to them to go away and call the police. If its a false alarm, tough shit.

The gypsies hit my neighbor and I doubt they will ever get over it. They were robbed of more than money and may never feel safe again. I agree with Dude. You don't have to open your door for anyone.

These guys are fine. My buddy is Muslim and they rang his doorbell and asked if they were Muslim. They said yes and they handed them out some flyers and such for a Mosque event due to it being Ramadan which is celebrated by Muslims. No worries
