As I drive down Western Ave. and other streets in Blue Island I notice this... Businesses that look run down from the outside, block after block. We need to take back our town and start holding these business/property owners accountable for their exterior appearance (at the very least!).

Take a trip down Western Avenue... Yes, there are some really nice looking business fronts- Iversen's, El Ranchito, Korbakes, Pierre's, Evita's, Meyer Eyecare, etc.

However, look at:
Joe's Fruit Market
Dollar Mania (by Popeye's)
Island's Cafe
Spice of Life (old Islander Pharmacy)
the Strip center at 123rd and Western (esp the old "Holsum Foods" building)
My Dollar and Up (on Vermont and Western)
2840 Vermot- the warhouse on Wirenton Rd.
Whoever owns the empty old Klein's building

All of these buildings are making our town look terrible! The windows are covered with either old sale signs, painted and covering 70% of the windows, the paint on the building is falling off (and has been for years).

The City Council and/or Building Dept (or whoever at the city level) need to start fining these businesses/property owners for having run down business fronts or at the very least make them aware that the community is not going to tolerate "ugly" store fronts anymore.
They need to take pride in their buildling (even the vacant ones).

You want to shop and eat at places that have a clean, upkept store front. How are you going to attract new business if the outside of your store looks dirty and unkept? No one is going to want to try out your business.

I just think a MUCH BETTER job can be done to make these businesses start taking social responsibilty. These businesses have gotten away with their crappy exterior appearances for too long. It's time to hold them accountable. It is not only an eyesore to the community, but to the people traveling through town.

You are kind of missing the mark. If you really want to cure this sickness, the entire elected body of Blue Island city government must be replaced. This is a sickness.

Drive down the alleys. You have to hold your breath or you will throw-up. Check the Drive-thru at Quiznos you loose your appetite by the time you get to the menu. Filthy. The whole town needs to be POWERWASHED starting at City Hall.

Maybe the whole town of Blue Island should be totally dismantled to nothing but an open pile of dirt.
Then good American people can rebuild it from the ground up.

That's what it started as, may as well try it again. BI is a low income neighborhood, there is no getting around that. It is going to look like one.

Absolutely agree. Where is the "Pride"? This oughta be a no-brainer and an easy fix for the city council. If nothing more than stopping by each to request them to clean up - what's required by their business license?? Oh, that's right - this is such a large city ...and we only see our elected officials during election time ... And what about the Chamber Of Commerce - don't they care???

Also the owners of vacant storefronts must be held accountable - clean windows, proper signage, or imaginative alternatives like hosting pop up art displays.

While we're at it - how about repainting the cross-walks and curbs?

The business district is reflective of our city's lack or vision, of caring, and of commitment to our town. Time for a change!

Hey, "the Forum" hosts a Calvalcade of Pride - why not a Cavalcade of Shame highlighting the businesses and property owners?

.

Blue Island is at its lowest point since I have lived here - 25 years. What we see today represents the best efforts of the administration and the Progressive party.

Blame it on the economy, on the politicians,- it doesn'r matter. If you have a business in our city or own property and it is vacant you should be required to keep it clean and presentable. Where is the city inspector? Where is the chamber of commerce? Where is "The Forum". NOWHERE.
They either simply don't care or have relatives or political cronies involved. People visiting or driving through Blue Island rightly should think this is the next Harvey or Robbins ...on second thought. Harvey and Robbins have more development going on than Blue Island!

Hello ....Coalition Progressive party .... "Thanks" for taking our town into the gutter.

We need a leader and an administration with a vision, a commitment and a moral compass.

Joe's Fruit Market and that factory on wireton and Francisco look TERRIBLE. Businesses should have pride in what their store front looks like. And their should be an ordinance to hold these owners accountable!

Who is too blame you ask? Why just look in the mirror. You, the voters did. And you will do so again because you are either too lazy, too apathetic, too stupid or all 3. This City Council did not appear out of no-where. Mayor Peloquin did not drop out of the sky. The electorate of this town PUT THEM IN THOSE SEATS OF RESPONSIBILITY. And what makes matters worse, you won't even take the time to go to a council meeting to see how they are doing it & consistently do it. Sure there are a few citizens who will take the time & effort but they get muzzled because the rest of the voters & citizens of this town just don't give a damn.
They will ask one day when they finally pull their heads out of their pie holes and look around. But by then the rest of us will have pulled up stakes and oved on...leaving this town to resemble Robbins or Dixmor.

That pallet place on Wireton is an eyesore!! That building should have been painted a long time ago, as well as their lot paved. All the other businesses on wireton look decent. Except for that Wright Furniture, I think they went out of business. The city really needs to trim the grass over there or hold the owner accountable. Get with it people!!!

If you want to see pay offs to the city, take a good look at 119th and Western. How could these buildings be in the shape they are in if they didn't pay off the mayor and the city building inspector?

This isn't NYC - there is no reason our officials can't walk about town, stop in these businesses and ask them to clean them up. Same thing with the alley's and dumpsters.

If they don't then get others involved. Where is the BI Commerce committee?

We need to "clean up" our business district ...garbage attracts garbage.

What is the city doing to attract new and quality businesses? What is happening with Jewel and how can we let them hold us hostage?

The condition of our town is courtesy of the Coalition- Progressive party. Vote them out in November!

How telling - obviously part of a larger "activist" organization with no interest in helping the Mexican community here ...only to tear down our town.
