Senator's residency status is upheld

A legislative watchdog determined yesterday that Republican state Sen. Karen Gillmor is a resident of Tiffin, not Dublin, and therefore is entitled to mileage reimbursements from the state. Read more

The political games have to stop. This is another waste of time and taxpayer money. Obviously James Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, had a clear political objective here. Leahy attacked a Republican State Senator whose husband died, and she has brought her children to Dublin while she does the state's work in Columbus. Tiffin is her home, Dublin/Columbus is where she works and temporary resides. It's sad she had to waste precious time defending herself while there is important work to be done in this state.

Okay, so if she is a resident of Tiffin, why are her children allowed to attend Dublin schools? You can't have it both ways. Either she lives in Tiffin and that's where her kids go to school or she lives in Dublin and she doesn't get the milage. Which is it going to be?

Being a Republican simply means that rules and laws are for the "little people." Isn't that what longtime GOP socialite and donor Leona Helmsley once said?

The Republican Party is little more than a crime syndicate whose members steal from the many to give to the few.

Gillmor and Husted are Republicans and the all-Republican Supreme Court will ensure that they are exempt from laws the rest of us must follow.

President Obama needs to file a RICO action against the GOP. The Delay, Abaramoff, Foley, Noe, Ney, Taft, Cunningham, Renzi, Stevens, etc, scandals all go to show the GOP commmits crimes to feather their own nest. The Bush Administration: Rove, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, all need to be held to account for war crimes and illegal no-bid contracting and war profiteering.

The GOP is little more than a criminal enterprise. It's like the Mafia, only without the honor code.

It isn't about political affiliation, it is about a waste of txpayer money and a loophole to allow abuse of a law. This is a complete scam, the kids go to school in Dublin, I say that is where she resides. Otherwise I claim Florida residency so that I don't have to pay state income taxes!

Well it is really interesting how others believe her children should go to school in Tiffin. Any mother, let alone rep or senator with children, would want their children close to their jobs if at all possible. She has a huge plate to fill just like any other parent. I have no problem with her children attending the school close to her job and part-time home. If one of them gets sick it is a lot easier to run to Dublin than Tiffin. Good grief people!

I don't understand the story. Is this about her voting residency, which seems like it has been settled to be Tiffin, wherever she actually spends her time, or is it about whether she is actually travelling to and from Tiffin each week? That is, is the money she gets reimbursement for ACTUAL miles travelled, or just an assumption that she travels to and from Tiffin? I don't have a problem with her getting reimbursement for actual miles travelled. I object if she gets mileage based on an assumption that she lives in Tiffin, but only travels from Dublin. How does someone figure that out?

Yes, Marge, I believe that is the issue: she has a residence in Tiffin, drives to Columbus from Dublin, and get reimbursed for driving the longer distance. Is it too much to ask for legislators to submit their ACTUAL mileage for reimbursement? It's a matter of a little record-keeping.

Whats so insulting to this entire issue is that ANYONE would get paid to travel to work...I have NEVER worked for, or known anyone who has to go to a "standard" place of work and get paid to drive there. This is yet another "perk" politicians give themselves for what normal everyday workers in this country have to pay for with tax dollars.

The amount she gets comes to about $12,000 a year which is about the minimum wage for some folks. I bet she drives the scenic route to boot!!

I do not care what political ideology you prescribe too, this is a simple case of wasted money and perks by those who make the rules that we have to suffer under. And like so many have pointed out...HOW in the heck can you send your kids to Dublin Schools and claim to live in Tiffin???? WHat does she do wake up at 4am and drop her kids off at school every day..Ya RIGHT!

Nothing but G-DAMN CROOKS..ALL OF THEM!!

I was thinking about this.

For voting registration purposes (which is the test that the mileage is reimbursed on) "having the intention to return" is sufficient.

For school enrollment purposes, she doesn't need to live in the district. Her children do. A property in the district is sufficient for that purpose.

How ridiculous-if you live there five days a week and your kids go to school there you live in Dublin. We should do all we can to get her retired back to Tiffin-or is it Dublin

Columbus gets what four state senators? How is that fair representation?

The IRS will have the last word on Senator Gillmor"s mileage issue. If they find fraud, she will have to pay it back with penalty and interest.

Forget the toothless Legislative Ethics Commission but hello IRS.

Franklin County is split into three districts.

The district in question, the 26th, is a giant district that spans from Sandusky County on the shore of lake Erie down to Union County.

Her house in Dublin, therefore, is in the Union County part of Dublin.(Undoubtedly a purposeful, but politically wise, decision.)

One thing is for sure: Gillmor is going to take every taxpayer penny and every tax break she can get her slimey little hands on! You can bet on it!

I'm reading many ignorant posts left here for the simple fact there are many here who believe this is just a Republican issue, bad news it's not. This issue runs on both sides
of the isle and for anyone to believe it's different can't be honest about anything in their own lives.

This individual in Dublin obviously has too much time on his hands to play these kinds of games while our state is in such financial trouble. Too bad he can't put more effort into help be part of the solution. Mrs. Gilmor isn't doing anything any other member of the Ohio Legislature is doing the only difference is democrat men love to go after women just as the Kennedys have done for years. Funny how this crook didn't have the nerve to pull this while Mr. Gilmor was alive, it takes a real coward to pull a stunt like this.

See you all at the polls in 2010.

There is one fact that everyone has overlooked. Sen.Gillmor and her late husband built a home not just in Dublin, but in Tartan Fields, a golf club community!!! The home is well over a MILLION Dollars! Is this really necessary to have your children near you while you serve your constituents? I don't think so. This is wretched excess in action! They have lived there for 4-5 years and yes the kids have attended Dublin Schools. She commutes from Dublin, not Tiffin. No matter who we are talking about, there should be a cap on what is spent to "reimburse" our elected officials for their living arrangements while they serve in office. I'd say most of you would agree that a ONE MILLION DOLLAR home is not justified!
