Ti man arrested on drug charges

TICONDEROGA — A Ticonderoga man who police say was carrying almost 100 grams of cocaine was arrested this week on his way to work.

Donald R. Handy, 49, of Pinnacle Street, Ticonderoga was stopped by State Police on Mount Hope Avenue as he drove to work at Ticonderoga Elementary-Middle School.

Handy is employed as an evening-shift custodian for the School District.

He was charged with two counts of felony third-degree sale of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Handy went before Ticonderoga Town Justice James O’Bryan, who sent him to the Essex County Jail when he couldn’t pay $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bail bond.

Handy had 98.3 grams of cocaine in his possession when he was stopped at 2:45 p.m. Monday, State Police said. He is also accused of having one rolled marijuana cigarette in his pocket.

The 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck that Handy was driving was impounded by State Police and taken to Troop B headquarters at Ray Brook for processing.

Ticonderoga Town Police assisted State Police, and Essex County District Attorney Julie Garcia said her office was also apprised of the arrest.

“The case is anticipated in Essex County Court,” she said.“I can’t say much more until we are in court.”

State Police are continuing to investigate Handy’s activities.

How sad that drug use seems to be rampant in Ti with easy access to all types of drugs. I live in a college town and we don't seem to have nearly the drug problem Ti does. If guilty, I hope Mr. Handy and friends are punished with prison, not rehab and drug court.
Surely there are folks in Ti who are living drug free meaningful lives, having babies and caring for them and not sexually abusing children placed in their care. They need to take control of their town before this impacts their families and no one with any morals or values is left living in Ticonderoga.
Perhaps this all went on when I was a kid living in Ti but somehow I don't think so.

Caught with it on his way to work at the school. Wonder who he was going to sell it to?Right now the only employees that are drug tested are the bus drivers.I think anyone working at the school, whether it be teachers, administration help, cafateria help, custodians or cleaners they should be tested.

I agree all employees should be tested and as a ti resident i have a 7 yr old that attends the same school how frustrating it is to know that the very same people that work there sell drugs from a school a friggin school!!!

School's would be closed down tomorrow if all the employees were tested for drugs as well as alcohol and illegal prescription drugs in their systems. While we are at it how many are wigging out during the day without their nicotine.

I have heard it.Drugs are in schools and the only ones who get tested are the ones who are required to do so for sports if their school has that stipulation.Yet those children also have to maintain above average grades and be at their best behavior in order to participate in their sport programs.Yet you can employ staff without the same standards.

Staff in all three schools have their own standards and schedules. The heck with the kids.

Cashiers at Wal-Mart are drug tested, you would think all school employees are. Sadly no one working with the children are tested. Drug use in this town has always been "high",and being tight lipped and passive only makes it allright. Our children are not blind,do our community a favor, stand up and do something.

And, what do you think would happen if you started randomly drug and alcohol testing the faculty, staff and admin. in the district?? Better have a replacement plan in place and ready!

Everyone knows that Ti has had more than one raging alcoholic teacher over many years.

IT SHOULD be policy! Absolutely. Good luck convincing the District...not to mention the Teacher's Union!!!

Rick Mott was taken out of the school in March when he came back from his lunch break totally stoned. He is a Custodian at the Elementary School. Teachers went to the main office and complained and his suppervisor was called. Don Olcott came to the Elementary school and escorted him home. He was then sent to rehab in Saratoga and can resume his job next month.

Who has a problem with this? He would come back from lunch numerous times with powder under his nose. Someone would tell him and he would wipe it off. This has been going on for years and the school knew it.

So people, your children are going to this school with a known drug user. Do you believe that he should keep his job? I wouldn't want him at school where my kids are going. I don't feel he should be able to keep his job. Here we are doing a budget for the school. This is a position we can get rid of and hire a new person at a lower pay.

Why are we condoling this person? Is it because his supervior doesn't want to get rid of his friend? Or is it because there are other members of the custodial staff that are also users and they all want to ban together? I don't feel good sending my kids to school with drugs going on right in front of the kids.

Maintenance staff probably have a union to hide behind, too.
