I recently saw a pregnant woman drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette, standing outside in the cold.
Don't doctors screen for alcohol and drug use/abuse any more? It's so sad. FAS means permanent brain (and other) damage that cannot be treated.

I need to ask when did they ever screen for alcohol and drug abuse of a pregnant woman? Even if a screen is done, how can a doctor be responsible for the actions of the women? Yes, it is sad and tragic there are still children being born addicted to drugs and diagnosed with FAS but let's put the blame on the mother.

This is bullshit, pure bullshit. I am about to have a kid, I deserve a drink for Christ sakes. And I bought these cigarettes with your tax dollars on my food stamp card. You people are so stupid.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome should be more common in Ticonderoga that the common cold. Drink, smoke, make babies, collect welfare, repeat.

Actually, having worked for more than one OB/GYN, I know that some medical practices require drug and alcohol screenings, and also HIV screenings. It is required, in part, to prevent stupid medical malpractice lawsuits. But also, to protect the unborn.

Of course it is the fault of the mother.

How can it be her fault if her unborn child chooses to drink? Damn unborn children....can't even abort them soon.

What I don't understand is why these women are not arrested for...child endangerment, abuse, call it what you want! I know that some states take babies away from the mother's at birth and put them in foster care when they are born addicted. Screening is common. As it should be.

I know a young man whose mother drank hard liquor while she was pregnant. Right here in Ti.
He's got moderate to serious cognitive issues (mental retardation). And is, of course, on disability. True, very sad.

You are absolutely right. Some people think that you can tell if a child (or adult) has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome by their facial features. This is not always true. There is, however, always brain damage--mental retardation, mood disorders, behavioral issues.

It is *very* sad that a baby has no choice but to suffer for nine months and begin life as an addict!

How about just the tiniest bit of responsibility and love.

Or, is that just too hard?

Sounds like the child will be smarter than the mother!!

Because Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is Incurable, there are adults with FAS that don't know why they have learning disabilities or behavioral problems (like sudden outbursts of anger) or low IQ.

These people should ask their mothers to be honest with them about the possibility of alcohol use during their pregnancy.

And yes, it is STILL going on, even though we know that alcohol causes brain damage to the baby that can not be repaired or even treated. It's sad and shameful!

A child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome may very well have siblings that are also affected. All children from that mother should be evaluated.

I know a young man in Ti who has some fairly serious cognitive issues, and his mother admits to drinking a LOT when she was pregnant.(She tells the story like someone should give her a medal.??)

Anyway, his sister has some problems, too. Makes one wonder!

That would explain why some of the children at school seem to have such erratic behavior, as though they have no control over themselves. Sad.

The most disturbing part is that Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is one congenital disorder that is 100% preventable if it weren't for the selfish thoughtlessness of the pieces of shit that call themselves mothers that continue to drink throughout their pregnancy!
