Thats how we roll up here. Keep the I's dotted, T's crossed, and your junk in your pants. Otherwise, we shoot your azz dead. Pretty embarrassing she was a bad shot tho. I feel bad for the pickup truck. It didn't do anything to deserve to be shot...(except maybe for being a Ford).
Agree- I would love to for her to turn her attention on some others in this town...

What about DNA? I know they didn't have it in the 80s but they do now. I wonder if the police kept the rape kit evidence? That's if they even did a rape kit on her?

Why not call the police and ask them what the f*k they've been doing about that case and this guy - he shouldn't be walking amongst us.

Well if they think he was innocent does that mean that a rapist/murderer is among us? I agree with the dna question, they should get a match of the evidence left behind. I remember this trial. I remember witnesses testifying that they saw them leave an establishment together. The bottom line is that the justice system failed here. If she had shot him, she would have gone to prison. Is that justice?

If he has been charged and tried for the crime already, and found not guilty he can not be tried for the same crime again. It's called Double Jeporday. Was he in fact ever tried ?

He was and the court system screwed it up. I thought if they had matching dna they could go back and file charges. He walked out a free man and to this day no one has paid the price for a cold blooded murder of a young girl from Ticonderoga. I think it happened that way because she came from a meager background. If it were a family that had money or it took place today, the outcome would have been different. It still bothers me that justice was never served for this woman or her family members.

No, he can not be charged for the same crime twice, once he has been acquitted or found "not guilty". O.J. Simpson could admit tomorrow to Killing Nicole Brown Simposon and they could not try him for that murder again. It would be Double Jeporday. Although, they could get him for purgery....

Of course, and that is how the world goes 'round. If she had been from a family with the "right" last name, I think things would have worked out differently...unless they are completely and utterly stupid in Warren County.

Believe me, MANY people feel that justice was not served, and yes, there is a murderer walking among us. Isn't that just charming?!

WOW I am stunned. I have lived in the area since 1990 and had no idea about this. I feel so bad for the family. How old was this girl?? How old is Mr.Smith?? Heart breaking.

Mr. Smith was 24-25 years old and married when Ms. Baker (24) was murdered (1988), so he would be 45-46 now.
I read that his lawyer pretty much got him off the hook by determining that he had the thought process of a 10-12 year old, and was intimidated into making a confession...
If you go to pressrepublican.com and search the archives, there's like 6 articals on this case.
I think that his background should be checked and used to help Mrs. Smiths lawyer, reduce her charges.

I had to chase an african american man away from my house in a similar manner just a couple weeks ago. It was too dark outside to see the sights well.

She was spending time with the wrong people, and we tried to tell her that. And she knew that, in a way. BUT, she in no way deserved to die, especially the way she did. That man is an animal, plain and simple.

YES! The authorities couldn't have screwed it up more if they had tried.

Then again, did they really care about this girl? I mean, if she had had a *different* last name...

Exactly! How *would* this case have been handled had she been someone else's daughter or sister, etc.

You KNOW precisely what I mean!
