Opened my new tax bill and saw the huge increase of 17.4%. How do they think people are going to be able to continue to pay this? We have very few services now and it looks like the majority of our taxes are going to county services, which are what?

You know--freebies! AND, you gotta pay those workers to distribute those freebies. And, they have a union!

So, unless the few working people who are left in Essex County make a lot of noise--like using some OUTSIDE news--we are all screwed.(And, this is why people are leaving as fast as they can.)

I've been retired for 20 years. Pension is exactly the same , to the dime, as it was 20 years ago. But, of course, we receive those HUGE SS increases which help us live an abundent livestyle. I say, keep raising our taxes and pretty soon you'll be able to auction my house at a tax sale.

Don't worry the county has to cover thier upcoming "obama-care" health ins. cost increases, fund the white elephant prison in Lewis, and pay for one very expensive radio system so the emergency services can continue to play. They won't be happy until we are all bankrupt and the only ones left are career welfare and rich summer people. Time to break out the fence rails, tar and feathers !

I no longer live in the area I thought about coming back but you people are screwed. I'm shocked and find myself in disbelief that anyone can survive in Essex county. I can't imagine I really can't...

Ok. What r u people talking about ? Huge tax increase..... The total increase I experienced was $92. That is not huge. If you spread that out over 12 months that is less than $9 per month. I don't see that as outrageous. Try living in other counties. Their taxes are higher than ours.

Mine went up 520.00. I can't imagine what the lakefront properties are up to. Come on politicians, think before you spend. You are slowly killing these small communities. We do not have any jobs in this town. You are going to put a college in the biggest store that could employ hundreds. I hope Grinnell can bring some new ideas to the town and county because we are sinking fast and we need to put people back to work and less on the welfare roles.

If they (confused) only went up $92 maybe they get senior star or some other exemption. I too went up...485.00. I do not live on the lake and I am assessed for $149,500. This of course will raise my mortgage payment because of the escrow, making it more difficult to save money monthly. I am glad this isn't affecting confused, but it is certainly affecting me, and many others that I know.

Mine went up around 400.00 and this is just the first year,The county is emulating the Governor, Slipping unpopular legislation in when no one is looking.Wait till the poor old people with no C.O.L. coming realize that four more years of big increases are coming! Just remember the county manager dreamed this up,and the majority of supervisors voted for it,they need to go, only one or to supervisors voted against this, how about yours? Make sure we return these dis-connected clowns to the private sector first chance we get.

Are you surprised, did you see the salaries of some of the "drones" in E'town in the paper last week. Our "fathers" up there never seen a tax they didn't like. I suggest next election we clean house, everyone should go but probably the next ones would be as bad or worse. I guess there is no real answer other than get to hell out of Essex County.....

wow... all those fiscal conservative republicans you morons voted into office sure are doing their jobs. Let me clue you into one truth... they don't expect you to pay your taxes. At all. Why ever would they do such a thing, you ask? Lemme tell you why. Your taxes are free money to the county. They don't have a dime invested in your property so when you default on your taxes, they can takes your property and auction it off, usually to an out-of-state concern that they (and the local municipality) can bilk and bilk and bilk because they have the money. Meanwhile, the attitude is, if you don't like it, move.:) Here's a number for you... in 2012 only 234,000 people moved to New York state while 454,000 moved the hell out. What does that mean to you? The tax base is shrinking dramatically... if people are leaving and businesses are not coming here... eh, that's right, do the math people... who is going to pay for to pay for all this? YOU, the minority working schlubs of essex county. But honestly, before you go bitching about the people running the county, maybe you should've reconsidered voting for them again and again.

Come on people if your taxes went up 500 bucks with a 17% increase then you have one hell of a home. The tax rate is less then 3 dollars per thousand. To make math easy call the county rate 3 bucks per thousand. To get a 500 tax bill for the your county taxes your house would have to be assessed at 166K. As I said before the tax rate is less then 3 bucks so your house would be close to 200K assessed value. Also please remember that your tax bill for the county and town come as one. You pay your one bill that has your town/county tax all in one. My house is assessed at 106K, I pay 1000 dollar a year for my town/county tax, that's less than 100 bucks a month to have my roads plowed, and all the other stuff the town does, also all the services the county offers people. Essex county has one of the lowest tax rates in the county let alone the state. Please people research things before throwing a fit.

and star program are for school taxes only. If your taxes went up hundreds of dollars your house is assessed for hundreds of thousand of dollars, and your town tax rate jumped. Its not the county increase that made it jump that much.

I finally heard it from the horse's mouth, so to speak, over the holidays--board member. Ticonderoga apparently has two major problems, among others:

HOW MANY people are on welfare in Ti--usually MORE than one programs. It is unbelievable. So, they're contributing nothing, except maybe to Walmart and their slumlords.(Also, there is still a great deal of fraud taking place, even though S.S. has a Fraud Unit.)

NEPOTISM. Bingo! Said it right out loud. "Nobody wants to do anything about reducing spending." Why? Because "Somebody is always "related" to somebody. So, don't cut their job, or salaries, or ask them to give up health benefits or cut benefits." (BTW, the Ticonderoga landfill is a good example; compare how Ti's landfill is "managed" as compared to other nearby towns in Essex County. The school district is another big example of the big problem with nepotism, along with its own overspending issues.)

IF you think you voted in someone who is going to make big changes and cut spending, then go talk to them. Literally. Go talk to them regularly. Watch how nothing real gets done. Go ahead. After you've watched enough, maybe people will finally band together as residents and TAKE SOME ACTION. Because it is NOT going to get any better.

The county employee should not be allowed to double dip on their health insurance. Should not get paid to not take health insurance.

Buy a motor home and live in an rv park. Pay rent, no taxes. Winter in south and live in adks in Summer. Rent is cheaper than paying taxes. Everyone I talk to wants out. No saving this mess. No jobs, poor school, drugs everywhere,, so sad loved this town once.

As a retired County employee, Iím forced to live on a measly $177,000 County retirement a year now. In 10 years I can file for Social Security too. How did I do it? Simple, just work your last year as double shifts. Have someone else punch your time card and wow, what a check youíll get and what a retirement based on the last yearís wages.(nobody says anything as their date draws near)The free health insurance is great too. Thanks taxpayers and if an increase comes your way, think of me.(Psssst..this is common)
