Dont let them kid you,its the money they will miss, although im sure Forrest and Debbie will still contribute something.Maybe when they come up here in the summer they want to enjoy themselves w/o obligations.I say volunteer work cant last forever...no surprise...

What do you mean "Someone's grasping"?(Do you mean that I'm grasping?) And why put "provocative" all in caps and use three question marks? I infer from that, that I've just hit a nerve with you. What's up? Anyway ...

I just find it interesting (and, yes, provocative) that after donating so much money to the fort the Marses would bail out, and without any details (per this article). And is Westbrook's supposed/questionable "retirement" related to this bailout, as the Press Republican implies, albeit obliquely? There's a reason this otherwise terse article includes these particular (yes, provocative) details.

And, hey, I really don't know anything about the behind-the-scenes Fort Ti politics, but my nose tells me there's a story behind this headline.

I really dont see what the big deal is,they donated, they volunteered, they dont want to do it anymore,i dont consider it a bailout, perhaps theres a personal reason, like illness, that they dont want plastered all over the paper and topix.
Just as the paper said'it was rumored' Westbrook was retiring.Westbrook said he was looking forward to working with the board’s new leadership after the annual meeting.I understand your curiousity, but do not see anything else besides the obvious. So from my end, when ''your nose tells you there's a story behind this headline''i take that as grasping. If your right and something does come of this i will apoligize to you directly and admit that i am naive, but the news does have tendencies to exzagerate truths simply for headlines.

I am a HUGE fan of Deb and Forest, and like was mentioned earlier, maybe they would like to come up here and just "vacation". The fact that Deborah would step down previous to thte Grand Opening of an institute that bears her name, is in my mind a bit confusing, but honestly, it's none of my business why, and when I see them again, I won't ask. The Mars's have done a hell of alot for the Fort. Let's just let these people be. And thank them for their help by respecting their privacy.

While I understand people not wanting to delve into their friends' personal matters, nor wanting their private issues aired publicly, I still feel this story is relevant to this town and, actually, news-worthy -- more so than, say, something like "Naked Chilson Resident Chases Wife Around Barn with Machete While Slugging Down a Quart-Sized Genny."

There have been threads on this site that have involved people I know and have a certain amount of loyalty to, and I chose not to comment, and felt bad that they were having troubles and that those troubles were being aired publicly. I also agree that the Marses have made invaluable contributions to the Fort and deserve our praise and thanks. But I also think that speculation is healthy and normal and that we shouldn't differentiate between the so-called "losers" and "winners" in terms of whose story is spoken about. That isn't democratic. It's called freedom of speech, and, in my opinion, as long as no one's slandering another person, it's okay.

That said, I do apologize for using the word "bailout," because that word has negative implications. Something more neutral would have been more appropriate and respectful.

And, yes, papers create headlines, and even twist and tweak the facts to provoke readership. I also find the timing of the release of this news odd: late on a Saturday night. Don't know how newspapers work. Perhaps they had an empty space and just wanted fill copy right then and there rather than wait for the next day or two. But in the end, this is a rather big local story.

one percenter is so quick to jump down others throats on any topic.. ironic when it is his/her/its friend they want it to go away. if you can't handle it - don't dish it!

Mrs. Mars has expressed interest in recent years in other worthy efforts here in her hometown. It is my sincere hope that she will find other local projects to participate in.

Thank you, Debbie, for all that you have done in service to our community.

You will find there is plenty behind the scenes here. And, yes, the possible retirement of Westbrook is tied to Deb and Forrest Mars departure from the fort's affairs. There was great conflict between the Mars and Westbrook. I'd say you were right when you said it was a provocative headline.

I've heard that the cost overruns were in the millions. Maybe that has something to do with the resignation.

Who Westbrook *hasn't* pissed off is the short list. The people he keeps are him are ALL "yes-men." The rest--some seriously talented and nice people--just put up with his crap for so long and then move on.
He's got some really serious...issues.
And yes, having worked in the museum field and for non-profits, it is VERY unusual for someone like Mrs. Mars to not attend this
dedication.
Retire? Ha. Westbrook would MARRY Fort Ti, if it was legal!

We can only hope so. This man has alienated about everyone, including professionals at other historic sites and organizations, on BOTH sides of the lake!
