SafeLink Wireless is a government supported program
that provides a free cell phone and airtime each
month for income-eligible customers.

How to Qualify
The process to qualify for Lifeline Service depends on the State you live in. In general, you may qualify if...

1.You already participate in other State or Federal assistance program such as Federal Public Housing Assistance, Food Stamps and Medicaid.
OR
2.Your total household income is at or below of the poverty guidelines set by your State and/or the Federal Government.
AND
3.No one in your household currently receives Lifeline Service through another phone carrier.
4.You have a valid United States Postal Address. In order for us to ship you your free phone you must live at a residence that can receive mail from the US Post Office. Sorry, but P.O. Boxes cannot be accepted.
In addition to meeting the guidelines above you will also be required to provide proof of your participation in an assistance program, or proof of your income level.

.

Today, there are over 1,700 companies in the United States currently providing discounted telephone service. But, thanks to its extensive outreach promoting SafeLink, TracFone Wireless is one of the largest providers of Lifeline services in the United States, second only to AT&T.
Only certain Americans are eligible for SafeLink.

Eligibility guidelines vary by state but in general individuals qualify if they participate in a public assistance program such as Food Stamps, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), National Free School Lunch, Federal Housing/Section 8 Assistance, or if they do not receive any of these public assistance programs, they may also qualify based on total household gross monthly income. Customers can learn more or apply by calling 1-800-SAFELINK or visiting www.SafeLink.com

Isn't that nice, more freebies to encourage you to stay on the government dole.

I, on the other hand, have to get up and go to work tomorrow morning just so that half my paycheck can go to the govt to pay for stupid lazy people who don't want to leave their hometown to go find a real job. Or stand up to the government and tell them instead of spineless money you want them to start providing honest to goodness paychecks by creating real jobs.

Now they'll get to stay at home, eat their free food, play on their free computer and talk and text on their free phone, while enjoying the free fuel for their heaters and free electricity for their lights. They'll watch their cable which they can now afford because they have no other bills to pay. Their rent is subsidized, too, so mortgage or rent payments. Geez, must be nice!

Then they will drive to Walmart, buy their beer and cigs with cash that they get from somewhere (I gave up smoking way back when it went to $4 a pack cus I couldn't afford it, I don't know how THEY do!), and once they get drunk, they will mate and conceive yet another child who will garner them more monthly income from the neverending pot of gold in E-town.

The middle class is dying off fast and no one cares. The world is going to hell in a hand basket and no one cares. The middle class are the only people left in the world who can make a difference, I think. The rich just want to be richer, and the "poor" just want to sit at home and be taken care of. Greedy and Needy. They are going to be the only "classes" left. I don't want to be either. Its a sad sad world.

Go get your free phone, though. You must be so proud of yourself when you fill out the forms and find that you are indeed poor enough to qualify. It must be somewhat like winning the lottery. LUCKY YOU!!!

No you do not have to be on welfare. There are not many people in essex county who make a LIVABLE wage. Just because you are poor doesn't make you automatically on public assistance, it just means that the job market it bad here. Have you ever tried to live on minimum wage?? Try it sometime and get back to me, and tell me if you can have the luxury of a phone. Let alone food and electricity...

Not to offend you but being a stay at home mom is a luxury as well. If you want a phone get a job. I have 3 I miss my kids all the time, but the bills have to be paid. I hate that time is being take. Away from my faint so I can support yet another useless an mismanaged government program

This program is actually a good one that costs taxpayers nothing or very little. These phones, are recycled phones, low end cellular with minimal features and 250 to 400 minutes per month.

The phone companies eat the cost as there is a federal regulation that stipulates they are to be made available for exchange the telco companies get special frequencies and make boatloads of money.

It's a small sacrifice to ensure kids ate safe, elderly are safe and all are able to call for help etc when necessary.

A phone today is not a luxury.

a landline with 911 access is just as effective for the elderly, I'm sort but a cell phone absolutely is a luxury. If you don't work and pay your own bills you don't need a cell phone.

I think they get 200 minutes a month.Usually, the phone given to them for emergencies is out of minutes because the holder wastes them all on yakking with friends. The program is considered a failure because use can't be controlled and limited to its intended purpose, which is to be used in emergencies. Another entitlement program wasting taxpayer dollars.

Just a word to all you fools out there that must work and EARN what you have not been given for free: get up on time so you can get to work on time....pay your taxes on time and don't make a mistake or penalties and jail await you.....on your way home be sure you're wearing a seatbelt and not going too fast and your paperwork is in order and you are sober as a judge(who you will see a LOT of if you break ANY of these and many other rules). You are, after all, reliable,
honest, lawful and productive. You are also a schmuck.

It is great you can only have one per house hold. have to give prove of being one one of the options. I got one, but since i was able to get a good contract, gave it to a relitive that needed more then i. every 10 months you have to reregister it. there are 2 different options for use. roll over mins wich you get less or one with non rollover. you are able to add more mins phone cards.

SafeLink phones are not paid for by taxpayers or the federal government. TracFone Wireless pays for the phones and also the cost of promoting its SafeLink program to make sure that eligible consumers know about the program.

That's ridiculous!
Geezz, aint anyone ever heard of google?
Here's the real deal on who's paying for deatbeat's "free" phone.

~~~~~~~~~~
"Who’s Scamming Who?
At least three large companies are involved in the free government cell phone scam. We were angered when we read their websites. And you probably will be, too.
Because it turns out that if you’re an average, hardworking American citizen who pays for your own cell phone or land line telephone, you’re also paying for these deadbeats’ free cell phones and free minutes.
Want proof? Check out your own phone bill. You’ll see that a little extra charge called the “Universal Service Fund” is added to your bill every month. For example, in our latest phone bill. The charge for the Universal Service Fund is 75 cents.
Now 75 cents might not sound like much, but Wikipedia says there are nearly 300 million cell phones in the United States and another 300 million land lines. Do the math. At 75 cents each, that adds up to a lot of money.
Turns out this isn’t a new program, just a new twist on an old program. The Universal Service Fund was created many years ago to bring telephone service to the rural parts of the country that were under-served by private phone companies. But when Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the Universal Service Fund was expanded to include, you guessed it, free cell phones for the poor. No matter where they live.
It Gets Worse
As if it’s not bad enough that you’re paying for free cell phone service for other people when it’s tough enough to pay for your own, it gets even worse.
There are three primary companies providing the LifeLine service – SafeLink Wireless, Assurance Wireless and ReachOut Wireless. Safelink, the largest player in the business, is owned by the world’s richest man, Mexican multi-billionaire Carlos Slim.
The free government cell phone scam is very profitable for the companies involved. Obviously. A billionaire like Carlos Slim wouldn’t be involved otherwise.
Each customer costs the cell phone company about $3 per month for phone and minutes. But the Universal Service Fund pays the cell phone companies $10 per month for each customer.
It’s a brilliant scam. The government skims a few cents off the top of every phone bill, launders it through the free cell phone scam, and into the already stuffed pockets of a foreign billionaire.
The rich get richer. The poor get something for nothing. And you get screwed."
That's right....gov't leans on big corps to provide services to the 'poor' and they have to make up the shortfall by tucking it to their regular paying customers. We taxpaying workers are subsidizing the lives of an ever growing number of gov't employees and the freeloaders they 'serve'!
