This is a tragic story. I feel so sorry for the family of John Marmo. It sounds like everyone involved was heartless and cold. Justice should be served so the families involved can some have peace.

Just read an article from the Ventura County News and it said Toerner shot Marmo in the back. That just seems very wrong to me. A shot in the back sounds like Marmo wasn't attacking, but running away. A very sad incident.

I am still very troubled by this tragedy. Oftentimes, I find myself trying to look the other way and detach from the stories that flood the news. I live within close proximity to where the crime occurred, and I still find it hard to believe. I feel sad for the victim, his family and friends, but at the same time I find myself feeling sad for Matthew's family too. I remember the night the news broke about Matthew Toerner being transported back to the states. I was researching Matthew's Myspace page to see if there was something different about this person. Something that he may have expressed through his profile page that would have given some insight to what he was going through. Instead, I found Matthew's brother desparatley posting comments on the page hoping to find someone with answers or information. He talked about how his brother was being wrongly accused and he knew his brother could never hurt anyone. But now that it has been revealed with the alleged confession of how Matthew shot John Marmo, it's sad to think that so many people now have to face reality. In just a matter of seconds, the life you once knew, or the person you once knew are now gone. A senseless tragedy, an evil ex-wife, an obsessed friend of the ex-wife, and a young man who was way too naive and should have never had that gun. When you put them all together, we mourn the loss of a father, son, friend, and neighbor.
I just wish that when Marmo was alive the threats he reported would have been taken a little more seriously and he would have been protected from this madness.

Shocking really. Matt was in my boot camp division 946. He was a good friend to me and i can't believe he would pull something like this. My thoughts are with his family and the marmo family

Still following this story. Just read an article from the Navy Times and I still can't believe the actions of these Seabees. What were they thinking? You can't go around killing people just because someone says they are being threatened. Waiting outside for John Marmo to come outside and shooting him while entering his vehicle is premeditated murder. What was Matthew Toerner thinking? I read Toerner's statement and it didn't mention that Marmo had a weapon to threatening anyone with. Most likely Toerner will add to his statement that Marmo looked like he had a gun or weapon...they always do when no weapon was present. Heart goes out to the Marmo family

Still trying to figure out what the hell these Seabees were thinking. It's amazing how many people Butler asked to kill Marmo. I know people say "I could kil that guy" in a heated moment, but when someone persists and even showed someone a gun...that's when I would think there is something very wrong here. Why did Toerner talk Hardy out of killing Marmo and then kill Marmo himself? Did he want to be the "bad ass" and prove to the girls he is a tough guy. Waiting outside in a car for Marmo to leave his condo and gunning him down was very wrong and stupid. That doesn't sound like a tough guy, but more like a coward. Lets hope punishment will fit the crime.

I still don't comprehend how these two females, were successful in manipulating to this extent. It's not like they had the looks of a goddess that could mesmerize. If anything, one look at those two should have made any man run in the opposite direction. It makes me wonder if drugs were involved, because anyone in their right mind would be able to see that these women were nothing but trouble from day one.

I just can't understand how two women could be so manipulative. From what I have read these two young men had never been trouble before, but these girls have been raising eyebrows for quite some time. Why didn't the authorities step in and do something when the threats were reported to them? The police and the Navy really dropped the ball. Something should have been done long before these sick and evil girls had a chance to twist the minds of these men. The police really could have prevented this, but now Marmo's family has to mourn the loss of a son, a child grows up with no parents, and these girls have ruined Toerner and Hardy's lives as well. Talk about a situation where no one wins.

This is definitately a no win situation. These girls used Toerner and Hardy that is for sure, but lets not forget Toerner and Hardy must have known murdering someone isn't the right thing to do. Yeah the police could have helped Marmo better, but if it wasn't for the two girls and Toerner; John Marmo would still be alive today.

Letter to the Editor - Ventura County Star
December 11, 2006
Where were bomb stories?
Re: your Dec. 9 article,“Slain man had dodged death twice”:

I would be surprised if anything was ever done or if the appropriate department was even notified after John Marmo found two bombs. He probably was told, like I have been many times,“No crime was actually committed, so there’s not much we can do.”

And, if he was anything like me, he replied,“I guess when you finally have to tote me off in a body bag, then you can say a crime was committed, but then it’s too late for me.”

I was outraged when I read about the month prior to Marmo being gunned down in the front of his home. I was so outraged, I went digging through back issues of The Star from October to see if the bomb incident even made the paper. Instead, I was able to read the following headlines on the front page of the Oct. 18 B Section:“Fight obesity, one lunch at a time,” and “Board candidates talk of unification election 2006.”

I didn’t see any article about one of my fellow Camarillo residents finding two bombs. I didn’t see the paper print an article saying the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is seeking information regarding these devices. I didn’t see a column by Colleen Cason discussing how a man in Camarillo must live in fear.

Instead, I read,“The Star recommends the re-election of Port Hueneme incumbents.”
I could go on, but why? No one ever seems to listen, no one seems to care and no one ever thinks you are worth it.

I am disgusted with our community and the way evil lurks among us. The story said Marmo was not under police protection. He sure should have been.

What's going on with case? I heard from a friend that Seth Hardy's(suspected bomber) hearing was postponed again. How many continuences is that so far? I bet the family is angered by all these delays, but I know this is how the judicial system works. The more continuences the longer these suspects stay in a jail system rather than in a prison system. Let's hope they find out what a prison is like real soon. God Bless the Marmo Family!

I am originally from Camarillo and I still keep in contact with my old neighbors and friends. They still can't believe these people did this to "one of their own." According to court documents, Toerner's trial is set for Sept. 20th. The ex-wife's trial date is Sept. 26th and her friends is Nov. 26th, but Seth Hardy has been granted continuences so God only knows when he will go on trial. I pray for the victims family to be strong because it's going to be a long road ahead of them.

Seth Hardy is due back in court on June 11, 2007 in Courtroom 12 at 1:30PM - I am sure we will read about the case continued once again. What do these defendants have to prepare for...the way I see it is if justice is served their life is pretty much over with anyway. Stop delaying the inevitable and accept your punishment.

I think a lot of people think that the young men were maniuplated. It is a no win situation for all involved. My thoughts to everyone's family & friends.

I think the reason so many people are angry is because it was not a spur of the moment, self-defense, type of crime. It is alleged that people waited for the victim to come outside to kill him. There was time to back out of this plot, there was time to re-think the consequences would be, and there was ample time to do the right thing and not take someone's life.
Printed in an article printed Navy Times News dated April 3rd -
The shooter
At the Smoke Pit, a smoking area outside the barracks at the Port Hueneme base, Shannon Butler found helpful hands in two sailors, Matthew Toerner and Seth Hardy.

On the day of the shooting, Toerner, then 19, sat in the back seat of a rented SUV driven by Butler. They waited about 30 minutes before John Marmo stepped outside, and Toerner fired the gun, Toerner told homicide detective Joe Evans.

Toerner thought the murder would save Butler. He “felt that Shannon was in danger from Mr. Marmo, and he felt that it was Shannon or Marmo,” Evans testified.“She had told him of incidents that she had been beaten up ... and she was afraid of Marmo.” It’s unclear whether Butler’s claims are true, and no evidence was presented. Toerner said he declined Butler’s offer of money, saying,“It’s about protecting her,” Evans testified.

Toerner, who didn’t know Braswell, may have been conflicted. Days before the shooting, he told Evans, he and Butler went to Marmo’s home.“Shannon wanted him to go in the house and shoot him,” the detective said. But he “didn’t want to do it and he wasn’t going to do it.” They left after a neighbor confronted them.

Evan said Toerner, who said he left the gun in a backpack in the vehicle, was “extremely” remorseful.

Whether or not he was "manipulated," he still has a mind of his own. Did his mother never teach him murder was wrong??? Come on, people, Matthew Toerner is NOT a victim!
