No, Obama Didn’t Lie To You About Your Health Care Plan

President Obama has been getting a lot of grief in the last few weeks over his pledge that with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in place, people would be able to keep their insurance if they like it. First, it is important to note that the ACA grand-fathered all the individual policies that were in place at the time the law was enacted. This means that the plans in effect at the time that President Obama was pushing the bill could still be offered even if they did not meet all the standards laid out in the ACA.

The plans being terminated because they don’t meet the minimal standards were all plans that insurers introduced after the passage of the ACA. Insurers introduced these plans knowing that they would not meet the standards that would come into effect in 2014. Insurers may not have informed their clients at the time they sold these plans that they would not be available after 2014 because they had designed a plan that did not comply with the ACA.

Queen Of Spain Blog:

We Just Enrolled In Obamacare

Yup. The entire family just ditched my husband’s employer provided health insurance* and as of January 1, 2014 we’ll be on a plan with a different insurance company. One that, unlike Aetna, decided to go after our business and compete in the marketplace.

Our old plan had deductibles, and the out-of-pocket costs were 6k for individuals and 12k per family.

This new plan from Blue Shield of California? No deductibles. Lower out-of-pocket maximums. Lower copays. Lower drug costs.

All of our doctors are in-network minus one. But that’s why I got the PPO. It’s also a 90/10 which means we pay 10% of things normally not totally covered like hospital stays and MRIs and what not.

Our old plan? 80/20 in network and 60/40 out of network. Keeping in mind just about EVERYTHING for me was out of network. After doing all the math, just to start, we’ll be saving $18,900 per year. That is without knowing if I will be hospitalized in 2014, or need surgery or any of those things. In 2013 I was hospitalized once in July and the bill is still sitting on my desk. I’ve been making payments.

If the judge from my Social Security Disability case rules in my favor, that means I’ll be eligible for Medicare as well. IF that happens, that will mean we may not have much out of pocket at all.

This makes me shake and cry. We are one of those families who have been buried in medical debt since I got sick. We’re one of those families the President talks about…the ones who are so close to losing everything because Mom got sick. We’ve re-financed our mortgage using the HARP/HAMP plans with JP Morgan Chase. It wasn’t easy or pretty, but we managed to save some money per month to keep our home.

Now we are utilizing Obamacare. And yeah, go ahead and call it Obamacare, because without the President we wouldn’t have this opportunity.

Obamacare To Save Family $18,900

In a country discouraged by last month’s health care rollout and corresponding widespread problems, Erin Kotecki Vest and her family are rejoicing. Obamacare will save them almost $19,000 each year.“When the president says no family should lose their home because someone got sick, no family should go bankrupt because somebody got sick, that is us. That is absolutely us,” she told msnbc.

In 2010 doctors diagnosed Kotecki Vest with Lupus, an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks healthy tissue. Three days every other week she undergoes intravenous therapy, which lasts three to five hours each visit. And that, she said, is when “everything is going well.”

Additionally, she takes Rituxin, which is also administered to her intravenously every four months in two different six-hour sessions. Doctors have prescribed her Prednisone for the past three years. Complications from her diagnosis caused her to suffer from a stroke, lose her gall bladder and the majority of her colon, and undergo a hysterectomy.

Steve Benen:

Right Still Pushing ‘Don’t Enroll’ Crusade

Of all the things conservatives have done to sabotage and derail the Affordable Care Act – and good lord, is this a long list – nothing seems quite as offensive as the right’s campaign to encourage those without coverage to stay uninsured, on purpose, to advance an ideological cause.

Regular readers may recall that we covered this quite a bit over the summer. Conservatives launched organized efforts to convince the uninsured to voluntarily “refuse to enroll”– because if fewer people participate in the system, costs would soar, and in theory the system could become unsustainable.

Struggling families will of course be completely screwed in this scenario, but for the right, that’s a small price to pay – and a sacrifice they’re willing to see others make.

Eric Lach, referencing a report from the Alaska Dispatch, noted yesterday that the campaign is still very much underway. Indeed, it appears far-right Floridians are now lobbying Alaskans to stay uninsured on purpose.

Obamacare forces black college to cancel healthcare

Bowie University, a historically black college in Maryland, is being forced to cancel its student healthcare policy because of Obamacare.

Bowie administrators determined that the cost of complying with President Obama’s signature healthcare law would raise per semester costs from $50 for each student to $900.

Instead, the university made the decision to simply end its healthcare coverage for students.

“Bowie State University has suspended offering health insurance for domestic students for the 2013-2014 academic year,” said the university in a statement.

Obama Pushes To Save The Holiday Season For A Million Unemployed People

The Obama administration on Friday came out strongly in support of extending long-term unemployment insurance past its current expiration date. Top economic adviser Gene Sperling said in a statement to The Huffington Post there is “no question” that Congress should extend emergency unemployment insurance for the more than 1 million workers who could be affected when benefits expire between Christmas and the New Year.

“We have always done so when unemployment is this high and would make little sense to fail to do so now when we are still facing the burdens of the worst downturn since the Great Recession,” Sperling said.“It is high bang for the buck for the economy, reduces poverty and helps workers who lost jobs due to no fault of their own get back on their feet.”

America Produced More Oil Than It Imported For The First Time Since 1995

The United States produced more crude oil than it imported in October for the first time in almost 20 years, the federal Energy Information Administration announced Wednesday. U.S. crude oil production averaged 7.7 million barrels per day in October while 7.6 million barrels per day were imported. Total petroleum net imports were the lowest since February 1991.

The U.S. also produced more oil in September than it has in any one-month period over the last 24 years. The U.S. remains the world’s largest consumer of oil and the largest importer of crude oil.

Small Business and ObamaCare

A new survey shows that employers will drop coverage and cut hours.

One of President Obama's proudest boasts about the Affordable Care Act is that it helps small business.

The White House website says the health law "makes it easier for businesses to find better coverage options" and

"stops insurance companies from taking advantage of you, giving the consumer and business owner more control and making health-care coverage more affordable."

Small businesses aren't buying it.

Obama admin. not prosecuting wind farms for bird deaths

Each year 573,000 birds and 888,000 bats are killed by wind turbines in the U.S., according to an independent study published earlier this year.

The study, published in the Wildlife Society Bulletin, found that the federal government had underestimated the number of bird and bat deaths by 30 percent.

34 Million Americans Eligible for Free or Subsidized Insurance Under Obamacare

according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis, 17 million Americans will be eligible to receive subsidies in the Affordable Care Act marketplaces (exchanges).

This is in addition to those who will become newly eligible for Medicaid in states that accept the massive, fully-federally funded expansion of the program under the Affordable Care. If all states accepted the Medicaid expansion, that would mean yet another 17 million Americans with free health coverage.

If all states expanded Medicaid (at no cost to them - and likely less than no cost, since their cost of uncompensated care would be reduced dramatically), 34 million Americans in total would stand to gain either free or subsidized health insurance coverage. Thanks, Obama.

Why Losing Your Junk Insurance is a Good Thing

Insurance companies of course aren't telling their subscribers about why the law no longer allows the junk insurance they were selling you - if they did, they'd have to admit to not providing things like emergency services, hospitalization, lab tests, or rehabilitation from injuries.

After all, you may not take out all your anger at the black man in the White House if your insurance company came right out and told you that your insurance plan will no longer be available because as it stands now, if you get hit by a bus and lose a leg, they don't have to pay for either your prosthetic or the therapy you need to learn to walk with that prosthetic.

See, makes insurance companies sound like heartless bastards who are now being stopped by the law from abandoning their members at the moment they'd need them the most.

House GOP 2014 agenda starts with blank slate

Last Thursday, a group of House Republicans filed into Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s Capitol office suite and received a blank piece of paper labeled “Agenda 2014.”

The blank slate just about sums up where Republicans find themselves after a year marked by the first government shutdown in 17 years, futile efforts to repeal Obamacare and the inability to pass spending bills at the levels set by Republican leaders.
...
“What we have done so far this year clearly hasn’t worked,” said the GOP aide involved in the planning sessions.“Cantor wants to take us in a new direction, which is good. The problem is we don’t know where we are headed, and we don’t know what we can sell to our members.”

Being rated 25th in in the world regarding healththe care you would think all the negativity against Obama's health care would make politicians put more of a combined effort to come to better solitions on how to fix it instead of trying to destroy it. Talking to some of some of the countries that have social medicine might give us a better way to get this done nd done right. Why reinvent something that is being done and done right in other major countries. Having family members living in Germany and discussing this subject with them reassures me its time we move ahead of all the negativity and get this done. Civiley

WASHINGTON (Reuters)- President Barack Obama apologized on Thursday to Americans who are losing their healthcare insurance policies, saying in an interview that he regrets "we weren't as clear as we needed to be" about the reforms of his landmark healthcare restructuring.

Obama's expression of regret was aimed at placating Americans whose insurance plans are being canceled in spite of his oft-repeated pledge that if people liked their health plans, they would be able to keep them under the 2010 Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

"We weren't as clear as we needed to be, in terms of the changes that were taking place," Obama said in an interview with NBC News.

"I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation, based on assurances they got from me," he said.

The White House has been scrambling to control the damage from the botched October 1 launch of a plan aimed at making sure that the millions without insurance could get medical coverage.

The HealthCare.gov website designed to help Americans shop for insurance and see whether they qualify for subsidies has malfunctioned since its launch.

Anger has intensified as many Americans discover they stand to lose policies that they assumed would be grandfathered under Obamacare. Insurance companies have been dropping policies purchased or changed since passage of the law if they do not meet its minimum standards.

Obama has been lambasted by Republicans who oppose the law and by his fellow Democrats who are angry at the rocky rollout.

No, Democrats are not turning against the Affordable Care Act

Here’s what we can say about Democrats’ behavior ever since the law passed. They’ve been willing (and perhaps even eager) to distance themselves from whatever Republicans or the press were highlighting about the downside of reform at any given moment, as long as this distancing did not risk the core of the law, either because marginal issues can be fixed without undermining it, or because they were casting free votes for something that would never, ever become law. When something really did threaten reform (such as in all the repeal votes), they suddenly returned to the votes they cast back in 2009 and 2010.

Is it possible that Democrats could, if they reach a high enough level of panic, eventually support out and out repeal? No, they won’t.

Sure, it’s possible a handful of conservative Dems who have always opposed Obamacare will underline support for repeal, and the press corps will get very excited if that happens.

But for the vast bulk of mainstream Democrats, this is a decision that has already been made; they aren’t going to reverse it; and any current positioning doesn’t indicate otherwise.

Conservative Group Tries To Bribe Young People To Stay Uninsured With Beer

It’s clear Generation Opportunity has zero interest in helping people find the non-existent “affordable” options for actual health insurance. What they’re actually trying to do is convince young people to skip getting health insurance and just take their chances.

It is true that consuming alcohol helps get young people into that risk-taking mindset, but what Generation Opportunity fails to understand is that people do sober up, and when they do, they’re probably not going to be as keen on the idea of skipping insurance and seeing what happens as they were when they were drunk.

That Florida woman's canceled Blue Cross policy? It's junk insurance.
She can get a real plan for only $165 a month

Here are some of the gory details.(You can see the rest for yourself on this complete plan summary from the insurance company.)

The plan pays only the first $50 of doctor visits, leaving Ms. Barrette to pay the rest. Specialist visits can cost several hundred dollars.
Only the first $15 of a prescription is covered. Some prescriptions can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month
The plan only pays for hospitalization for "complications of pregnancy," which are unlikely given Ms. Barrette's age and in any event only the first $50 is covered.
It pays $50 for a mammogram that can cost several hundred dollars, and only pays $50 apiece for advanced imaging tests such as MRIs and CT scans and then only when used for osteoporosis screening.

"She's paying $650 a year to be uninsured," Karen Pollitz, an insurance expert at the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation, said. "I have to assume that she never really had to make much of a claim under this policy. She would have lost the house she's sitting in if something serious had happened. I don't know if she knows that."

In fact, had Blue Cross Blue Shield allowed her to keep the plan, she would have been fined for going uninsured in 2014. Limited plans such as these are considered "excepted benefits" that don't fulfill the new obligation to have health coverage.

How To Spot A Fake Obamacare Horror Story

Since insurers have begun informing beneficiaries that their health care plans do not meet the new federal requirements of Obamacare, and will be either cancelled or significantly altered, the media has profiled countless middle class Americans who claim that the new health care law will force them to pay more for coverage.

Deborah Cavallaro, for instance, a real estate agent from Los Angeles, was enrolled in an individual plan that cost her just $293 per month. Under Obamacare, Cavallaro says she’ll have to pay over $400 for coverage she doesn’t need or want. But a higher premium doesn’t tell the whole story: while Cavallaro may spend more each month, she’ll be buying more comprehensive insurance with fewer out-of-pocket costs, better benefits that will cover more and cost her less if she actually falls ill, and much more robust consumer protections.

So before you buy into the sticker shock hysteria, here are four questions you should ask:
