Pepe's Is Still Upper Crust -- Courant.com

Full story: Hartford Courant

In one of my favorite short stories, Truman Capote describes an author who has been living handsomely for years based on the critical success of one early novel and a couple of short stories.

It's so lame to get dinner by the mall in the Buckland area. I don't care how good the food is, it's just trashy. No thanks Pepe. Vito's Harry's Barb's, Luna, First and Last..... I'm all set.

"I don't care how good the food is"

Isn't that the whole idea of eating out and enjoying food?

If Pepe's ala Manchester is as good as New Haven, there is no debating.

Where are you from? Lets put it West Hartford, right? Because people in West Hartford, Avon, Farmington have far more superior tongues then the rest of us in poor old Manchester. Maybe its there because the people Frank Pepe's was meant to serve are people that live in towns like Manchester, New Haven, New Britain. Glad you like it, you can visit us whenever you want.

You spoke the truth. All those towns are superior to Manchester. Taking someone on a date to a restaurant in the Buckland area means you don't care for a second date.

If you're willing to eat those crappy pizzas (and yes, I've tried them all), go for it. Just makes the line shorter for us!:-)

Greg must not have gone on Tuesday night. Apparently they shut the ovens down twice a day...conveniently at 6:30 pm this past Tues. night. 8 people waiting in line and the waitress informs us it will be an additional HOUR while they shut the ovens down. Guaranteed the ovens aren't shut down on Friday and Saturday night. The ovens in New Haven haven't been shut down while I was ever there. As a new business, they ought to be ashamed. See in you in New Haven, because you won't see me at this facsimile in Manchester of the real Pepe's!

I tried Pepe's in Manchester last night. It stunk. I had great expectations, based on many reviews, photos, etc of the New Haven location. I'm a pizza nut, having tried just about every place within 20 miles of Hartford, with my favorites being Pizza West for greek (sadly, closed recently) and Harry's Bishop's Corner for thin crust.

From all reports, I was in for an even better version of Harry's. Sadly, it was not even close. The pie was overcooked on top, and undercooked underneath. Burnt cheese and barely cooked crust. The crust was also VERY salty, far beyond anything I've ever tasted.

I get the feeling I'm not the only one underwhelmed by this pizza. There were 3 people seated waiting for takeout, and perhaps 3 tables filled. This was about 8pm. I'll give them one more chance in New Haven next time I happen to be there, but I really feel let down by the quality of the pizza in Manchester. Back to Harry's Bishop's Corner, or Vegas Blvd if I don't feel like driving.

Too bad.
