After my carpenter father in-law's death, we just got lazy and didn't keep up his winter ritual of building new and refurbishing old bird houses for the martins. This year, my husband has redone one of his father's old apartment houses and hung 2 separate colony gourd bird houses. We have observed one martin last week and one this week checking out our facilities. Is there any truth that the openings should face south?

We have two gourds with each having 2 eggs. They have been in these gourds for several weeks and there doesn't appear to be any activity. Is it possible that they are not sitting on them?
