The basketball and tennis court has no fence around it which makes it impossible to play. There was a wooden structure around it with nylon fencing last year but it has been torn down . Apparently the idea of anyone playing hockey or ice skating is also no longer an option. There is not much for kids to do here in town. You have to go to Boonville or remsen if you want to play. we have the facility but it just has been let to fall into disrepair .Hopefully somebody that reads this can help.
Will history repeat

There was a time when Senator Jim Donovan contributed funds to form a Hockey Team. He even had funds to use to provide the skates for the kids. While that was some time ago, men from the town worked to get the room over the garage as a warming shack and they even had music piped out to the rink so kids could also skate when the hockey team was not using the rink. The hockey team was to become 'THE FORESTPORT SENATORS"
Well, it never happened. Why? Because even though there was a great deal of adult supervision at all time, the Town would not allow anyone to use the Town Hall Bathrooms.
Remember what happened to that???
There was a time when the "park" (now ball field) on Dutch Hill, was used for an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids, and movies were shown after lunch in the town hall. The kids rec program was booming then. Remember, and what happened to that?
The skating equipment was found after the years passed, not too long ago when they renovated the garage. While one can't cry over spilled milk, it is a shining example of what almost was, what had been, and what may eventually happen to the ball field on Dutch Hill.

Last year on Dutch Hill, the games were fantastic, it was clean, well cared for and adults handled the snack shack there. Now, just the fact that illegal booze is involved, and there were cigarette butts and broken glass found after it was used this week, could this become a case of "history going to repeat itself?"
I sure hope not for the kids sake and for all those who have worked hard to do something for the community and unselfishly for the KIDS.

Will fast pitch be coming to the Dutch Hill field soon? Will the little league return to the old ball field across from the church in the village?

Much to think about and observe. AND who knows, just maybe there will be tennis courts again!!
When I came to town, the kids, for not having anything better to do, were gathering outside on the steps of the Presb. Church almost every night. Will that be happening again?

Forestport, its young children, its teens and yes, even the men's fast pitch league deserve better!!!

Then get at it!! It's not an impossibility. Sometimes there are things you need to MAKE happen, and not always depend on others to open doors for you.
Make a plan!
Good Luck!

Summer Rec

I am suprised that the tennis court is not in condition to allow the summer rec participants to play tennis. It would be a nice way also, to provide an opportunity for the development of a potential student to excel in that sport.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE?

There was a net and a fence but nobody played tennis, and as it went to pot nobody came to the meetings and said we "would like to fix it up and play" So why spend the money on that if nobody was going to use it.

Get a group together who WILL use the courts and perhaps that may help the town to realize this will be used, and perhaps result in some good tournaments to watch and enjoy. Actions usually bring responses.
rec program

there is a summer rec. program there starting mom/july 9th for the town's children M-F, 10am -3pm, I am sure it would get use if it was fixed up with a fence. Without a fence ,chasing the ball down(possibly into the road) is just not fun.

I frequently play basketball at the town hall. Without the fence that was there recently the game has to stop every thirty seconds because somebody has to run down the hill to get the ball. The fence wasn't in pristine condition but it would've been an easy fix, but apparently not as easy as just taking it down all together. The net on the hoop was also torn for months before I purchased a new net with my own money. It'd be nice to know the town cared at least a little about the younger population and the least they could do to show that is by keeping the park in good condition.

Very true ,we need a fence, any kind of fence. The summer rec program starts monday and runs for 6weeks , what are those kids going to do , chase their tennis ball and basketball into the road or over into Mr. Tapley's yard ?Just put the old fence back or by a new one. We don't want our town sued when someone chases down the ball into the road and gets hit.It is a shame that someone had to buy a basketball net for the town , don't they care about the youth? The senior citizens travel all over the state on trips.....
ck board members

I am sure if someone contacts one of the board members, they will check into this and if possible will fix the problem. The other person is the one in charge of Summer Rec and also the Sr.Rec Program.
The new board member, JoAnn at the Kettle Corn place would also be one to contact. She cares and is good to chat with about the kids needs.
It would seem also, that the person in charge of the Summer Rec. program (also in charge of the Sr. Trips) could approach someone on the board about this need also.
I guess the Sr. Rec and the Youth Rec programs are run by the same person. They get paid to take care of things re: Recreation be it seniors or kids.

nothing to do at summer rec. A net for tennis would help and also a fence.
paid already

Do It....if you pay taxes in town you and I and everyone else have already paid for the rec program and playground eqpt. in our tax dollars. All the town Summer Rec Chairwoman has to do is ask the board to fix the dang net.
No need to raise extra money, it is already budgeted...

It would be nice if the town could get on the ball for these kids that are at the summer rec program all day and want to play basketball and tennis.
winter skating

Carthage, NY

#19 Oct 4, 2012
will there be a skating rink this winter?thousands of dollars were spent on it a few years ago for the warming hut and hockey boards, also maybe next year we will get a fence and tennis net for the court. We must be the town with the least amount of things for the children, as the seniors travel all over the state on their trips.....

They younger parents of today do not have the PLUCK and GET ER DONE attitude that the older parents did.
Even the older parents, and yes, even a couple of grandpas had a rink, skates, music, a warming shed, and volunteers to flood and maintain the rink which was the tennis court.
I have mentioned this before, as others have too, and perhaps some one of you YUNGUNS will take this project on. I believe there were skates provided for a hockey team, where they went is anyones guess.
If they got to the point they had a good hockey bunch to play, they were to be named the Forestport Semators after Jim Donovan who provided the funds to the Town to do this..........
Get 'er a goin'...even though this was a few years back,.....it can be fun and a good start for other winter activities.
It will be freezing before you know it!!
