Confusion about Municipal Elections

I have been told by certain friends, family members and neighbors that, when asking about registering to vote for the April 7 City elections, they have been told (by county officials in Alton) that one can no longer register to vote!

To verify this, I called from the Thayer public library on Friday, February 27, in the presence of others who could hear the essence of the conversation.

I spoke to someone who assured me that (as I believed to be true according to the "Blue Book") I could, in fact, register to vote in the April 7 elections up to March 11 (which, by state law, is the cut-off -- 4 weeks prior to the election).

The person who provided me the information identified herself as "Lauren." She went on to advise me that I could register at Thayer City Hall, at the License Branch in Thayer, or come up to Alton and register.

At the end of the conversation, she asked me to identify myself. I thought that this was peculiar as I wondered to myself, "does the answer to the question depend upon who's asking the question?"

That last question is rhetorical, of course. I am curious to know if others have had a similar experience. If so, please report it here.

All kidding aside, I admit that I do suffer from a form of mental illness (which is why I try to keep abreast of the National Alliance on Mental Illness - nami.org ). It took me years before I could publicly admit this. It took years before I could let go of the "shame" which was thrust upon me by society because of events which were beyond my control. But, I digress.(don't I always! ;)

The Man cannot pull any shenanigans which The Kid doesn't allow -- provided, of course, that The Kid has been properly trained and educated. In this case, The Kid proudly stands with head held high.:)

Yesterday, I received a phone call from someone who, again, complained that they had made the same phone call. Different day. Different voice. Different encounter.

Results? You guessed it!

Caller was told a very different story than I was.

So, I am now looking for any non-registered voters who would like to test the hypothesis with me.

When I showed up for election last time, I was turned away due to a technicality.

This time, I plan to have a fully-documented portfolio of the extremes that one *sometimes* must go through to exercise a right which is one of our most basic constitutional guarantees.

And, yes, I am reporting to a national organization on a regular basis. This organization is interested to monitor reported irregularities stemming from the 2008 Presidential Elections in this area of the state. As fate (or luck or fortune or what have you) would have it, I was not the only complainant this time.

And since you did not pay attention to his verbal comments then, I cannot expect you to pay attention now, either.
