Petition for alcohol sales is back

Ballot measure failed before five years ago
By Brandy S. Chewning Texarkana Gazette

The push to sell alcohol in Texarkana, Texas, has returned.
Petitions were placed around the city Wednesday in an effort to get nearly 3,000 signatures and put the issue on the May ballot.
If approved by voters, beer and wine could be sold at grocery and convenience stores inside the city limits. It’s the same measure that failed in the city by a narrow margin in 2006, and in Nash, Texas, in 2008.
The initiative is backed by Progress Texarkana, a special-purpose political action committee.
City Council Member Derrick McGary of Ward 1 supported the issue five years ago and is doing so again. He is treasurer of Progress Texarkana’s campaign.
Sonja Hubbard, E-Z Mart CEO, is Progress Texarkana’s assistant treasurer.
John Hatch, an Austin political consultant, was hired for the 2006 campaign by East Texans United for Better Business. He is leading the charge for Progress Texarkana

Derrick McGary says this is not a conflict of interest. The question is, whose interest. The city or the people.

Yeah, I know Cat. You love it. GW

Bring it by my business and I will happily sign it. Maybe then I can get my good Texas wine here in town. Arkansas side Party Factory does not carry Texas wines! Can you believe that? Half of their customers are from Texas!

Have you asked them to? In my experience if they didn't have something I wanted they could get it for me pretty easily.

Yes, I did. They specifically told me they do not carry Texas wines. They claimed they could not get it from their distributors. I would love to see them carry the Llano wines. They are very good, mid-priced wines.

I thought the initiative in Nash two years ago was to sell all liquors, not just beer and wine. I heard a while back that Nash was going to try it again for only beer and wine.

The (non) conflict of interest thing is probably with Texarkana, ARK, GW.

More than half. I am in there every day for my Sutter Home red zinfandel. Typically 2/3 to 3/4 of the vehicles are sporting TX plates. BTW they carry a great selection of wines; especially for a smaller city. Nice folks as well.

Makes perfect sense. All their distributors are AR based.

Tom Horn, you are right. They do carry an excellent selection of wines, and I do shop there on a regular basis for my wines and other beverage wants. The people are great, and I'm sure if they could get the wine they would. I was just sadly dissapointed, and surprised, that with so many Texas customers they could not get the Texas wines (which are great BTW). For now I will continue to get my good ole Arkansas wine there and drive south for my Texas brand.

I am a big fan of Zieganbach, but they only sell it in Texas. I think BWW is the only place in town that has it. I don't think Texas wines are marketed "by Texans, for Texans", like Zieganbach, so some liquor store in the area may be able to get it. I've used Tom's Jug House for specialty orders before and they usually can get whatever I want.

Beer and wine sales would bring much needed money into this side of the line. I only hope that the powers that be know how to use this money for the betterment of our community.

Maybe the sales tax revenue could be dedicated to something like support of police & fire.

I won't support the issue if it makes it to the ballot. Not that I am opposed to the sale of it, heck I worked at the party factory 20 some years ago.

I simply don't want to put any more revenue into the city of Texarkana, TX budget for them to spend. It is very unlikely that they would use the revenue where it was either needed or where the people would prefer for it to go.

Maybe part of it could be dedicated to paying Sullivan's yearly bonus.

I didn't think registrars (or their deputies) were supposed to try and persuade voters?

"Staff photo by Evan Lewis Leroy Dodd Jr., deputy registrar with the city of Texarkana, Texas, speaks to Bowie County Patriots during the group’s weekly meeting at Smokey Joe’s in Nash, Texas. Dodd told the group that liquor sales in Texarkana would be the gateway to strip bars." (Texarkana Gazette 1/14/11.

Strip bars, huh?

How'd the good old boy Patriots react?

Maybe they're getting tired of meeting at Smokey Joe's.

LOLOLOL!! Gateway to Strip Bars? I think that's a completely different ordinance. That has nothing what so ever to do with EZMart or WalMart selling beer and wine. The ignorance amazes me!
