Woman charged with perjury
Coyel accused local lawyer, two others of drugging, raping her
By Lynn LaRowe Texarkana Gazette
A perjury charge has been filed against a woman who claimed she was drugged and raped by local attorney Mark Lesher, his wife, Rhonda, and another man.
Shannon Renae Coyel, 38, is scheduled to appear Dec. 15 before a Collin County court-at-law judge, a staff member with the Collin County Clerk’s office said.
“It’s long overdue,” said Rhonda Lesher.“You cannot imagine what these lies have done to our lives.”
Coyel has not been arrested, but a notice of the hear- ing directing her to appear will be mailed to her last-known residence, the clerk’s office said.
Coyel’s allegations led to the indictments and arrests of the Leshers and Robert “Red” McCarver in 2008. This January, a Collin County jury found the three defendants not guilty after short deliberations.
The trial was moved from Red River County because of pretrial publicity and the Lesher’s longstanding ties to the community in which Coyel accused them.
The perjury charge stems from statements Coyel made under oath that were proven at trial to be false, according to a criminal information filed Oct. 1 charging her with misdemeanor perjury.
The offense is punishable by up to a year in the county jail.
During the trial, Coyel told the jury she had never said to anyone that she loved McCarver. On cross-examination, a taperecorded phone conversation between Coyel and McCarver was played. On it, Coyel clearly tells McCarver she loves him.
During his closing arguments, Red River County District Attorney Val Varley said that Texarkana attorney David Crisp had “degutted” Coyel during his cross-examination of her.
Varley ended his trial remarks by asking the jury to find the Leshers and McCarver guilty of aggravated sexual assault.
But the jury acquitted them, and the Leshers and McCarver walked from the Collin County Courthouse as free citizens.
Varley could not be reached for comment Wednesday. In a previous interview, Shannon Coyel’s husband, 63-year-old Jerry Coyel of Clarksville, said his wife had been confused about some facts and dates but that she had told the truth about being attacked on July 26, 2007.
Jerry Coyel said he was surprised to hear of the misdemeanor perjury charge because he believes his wife was no-billed by a Collin County grand jury earlier this year after being questioned concerning possible felony perjury charges.
“That DA, I like him but he wasn’t very efficient. They must not have a lot to do over there ... I guess Lesher’s just trying to stir something else up,” Jerry Coyel said.“In my opinion, he’s got a warped mind. He’s spewed a bunch of rumors. He tried to open up a toxic waste dump out there near Annona (Texas, Red River County). He didn’t get his way there. Then he tried to get his cronies elected and that didn’t work.
“He’s a publicity maniac, he’s just a freak. It’s like,‘Look at me. I’m god of the lawyers’ or something,” Jerry Coyel said.
Mark Lesher represented proponents of plans for a landfill in Avery, Texas, several years ago.
McCarver was Shannon Coyel’s boyfriend during her 2007 separation from Jerry Coyel. The Leshers allowed McCarver and Shannon Coyel to stay in a trailer on their property for a few nights during the period Shannon Coyel later alleges she was attacked.
Shortly after the Coyels reconciled in September 2007, Shannon Coyel made the allegations that eventually led to a trio of indictments.

The Leshers maintain Shannon Coyel was motivated to lie by her husband’s anger toward them and McCarver.
Rhonda Lesher testified during a custody proceeding concerning Shannon Coyel’s teen daughter—who is not the biological child of Jerry Coyel—that she had witnessed what she believed was inappropriate conduct by Jerry Coyel with the girl.
Jerry Coyel was awarded custody of the girl by former District Judge Jim Lovett amid allegations Shannon Coyel was using methamphetamine. Shannon Coyel testified during the Leshers’ criminal trial she had used and had problems with the highly addictive illegal substance.
Mark Lesher helped Shannon Coyel prepare a judicial complaint against Lovett that she recanted following her reconciliation with Jerry Coyel. Mark Lesher also reportedly helped Shannon Coyel hire Texarkana attorney Al Smith to represent her in the family law proceedings as she tried to later regain custody of her daughter.
Shannon Coyel’s daughter told authorities her mother had shown her a marijuana patch and told her smoking the plant in moderation was acceptable, according to a police report. The girl also alleged her mother had beaten her once with a belt. The girl was interviewed by authorities before warrants for Shannon Coyel’s arrest were issued.
Shannon Coyel was arrested while in Colorado with McCarver. When taken into custody, Shannon Coyel used her feet to kick out the windows of the police cruiser in which she had been cuffed and seated.
Shannon Coyel was never indicted in Red River County on the charges.
Varley previously said Shannon Coyel’s daughter didn’t want to press charges against her mother and thus the matter was not pursued.
Shannon Coyel’s testimony was all the grand jury that indicted the Leshers heard.
During the Leshers’ criminal trial, defense attorney David Crisp of Texarkana pointed out inconsistencies between Shannon Coyel’s testimony at trial and that which she gave during her time before the grand jury.
The Leshers maintained their innocence and hired some of the state’s best defense lawyers to argue their cases. However, the Leshers said there were anonymous accusers who used the Internet to assert them guilty without a judge or jury. The charges that added virtually to those they really faced in court were graphic and accused them of a bevy of unseemly behaviors.
Topix, an online news venue that promotes “Your town, Your news, Your Take,” became host to several “threads” that asserted with conviction that the couple not only sexually abused but spread disease, molested children, stole money and lied willfully. More than 25,000 posts were made by the time the case went to trial in January.
The Leshers filed what could become a ground-breaking lawsuit concerning what they describe as Internet slander. The complaint names Shannon Coyel and a long list of screen names associated with the offensive posts.
To find the true identities of those who anonymously wrote online about them, the Leshers sought and obtained subpoenas forcing Topix to hand over the Internet protocol addresses linked to the screen names. The arduous process is ongoing but the search has already yielded some names.
The first few screen names identified trace to several Fort Worth computers all located in the same business, Apache Iron and Metal. The salvage company is owned by Jerry Coyel.
With that information, William Demond, the Austin lawyer representing the Leshers in the civil suit, amended the complaint and added Jerry Coyel, Shannon Coyel, James Coyel and Charlie and Pat Doescher as defendants. James Coyel is Jerry Coyel’s brother and is listed on financial statements as a partner in Apache.
The Doeschers run Jerry Coyel’s office and business in Fort Worth.

Jerry Coyel has denied the libelous Internet posts about the Leshers originated with Apache. In a previous interview, he rebuked the technology used to trace the screen names that allegedly lead back to his business.
That case is still pending.
“Our records were expunged, but Shannon’s conduct is not,” Rhonda Lesher said before referring to false statements she believes Shannon Coyel made to Red River County grand juries.
“Future grand jurors, please act independently if Red River County’s local prosecutor will not and investigate her for aggravated perjury,” Rhonda Lesher asked.

Anybody that believes the grand jury will act independently is really naive. They will be totally controlled by the prosecutor unless someone with some knowledge and cods is on there and takes over. It has happened but very rarely.
We can always hope!!!
