The Texas-side Police Department has been without a chief since the departure of Danny Alexander.
The kindest among us would say Alexanders tenure was controversial. Others would say it almost tore the department apart.
City Manager George Shackelford selected Texas-side Police Capt. Joe Bunting to head the department after a long and careful review of potential candidates, both from within the department and outside the city.
Civil Service rules require the City Council to confirm or reject the appointment.
Bunting has a long and honorable record in law enforcement and with the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department. He has served in various and varied assignments within the force, giving him a thorough knowledge of department operations and needs.
Bunting was supported by law enforcement officials including Bowie County District Attorney Bobby Lockhart and Texarkana, Ark., Police Chief Bob Harrison.
But at Mondays meeting, council members voted 5 to 1 against confirming Bunting as chief.
Only Ward 4 Council Member Bob Bruggeman voted for Bunting.

I AGREE.

An African-American who is not hung up on race himself. Just a normal guy who happens to be of another color.

i had a black woman named tasha in that texas blvd building call my home last august or september, you could tell by her voice she was not wanting to hire me but had to go through the motions. said she didnt have my application, then how did she know to call. said she didnt receive a typing test, well twc took the applications directly and iknow i took a typing test. asked if i probably didnt remembered the jobs and i had them on file and repeated them to her.

more than formal educated and office skilled qualified, but i am not a SBF or MBF or MBM. i do not fit an ethnic minority so the city would get no minority hiring quota credit. you'da just had to have received that phonecall to read the tone in her voice. she was going through the motions just to officially say she had done so. maybe i could have her job, or perhaps someone else could who sounded less reverse discriminatory.
