I lived in Hooks from the age of 2 until I was 17. I moved away with my family and thought it was the end of the world! To leave the friends and neighbors I'd known all my life was devasting. However I moved to a bigger town and made more friends than I ever had at Hooks, but I've never felt the sense of family that I had there. When I was a kid, we rode bikes all over and my mom never worried because most moms like mine didn't work and they all knew me. If anything ever happened to me or I did something I wasn't supposed to, my mom knew about it before I got home!
I've been back to Hooks several times over the 35 years since I moved and I'm saddened by the run down appearance and I know many of the wonderful people I once knew are gone now. Although I'm glad I moved, Hooks was a great place to grow up.

I'm not trying to pick on you Meg, but what is your beef with us? You posted twice in a row with the purpose of insulting our schools and BOTH posts were very poorly written.
I assume that in our contest, if you choose to accept, you will not want ENGLISH to be one of the subjects we contest?
What was the REASON you were private schooled Meg? Just curious. You DO know we have private schools here too don't you?
No offense, but I'll put it to you personally, my PUBLIC education in small town Hooks gave me a better grasp of ENGLISH than you received in your private Dallas school. Again, I don't mean to offend, I'm pointing out the glaringly obvious.
Well I also live in Hooks and my children attend Hooks, and here is just a fact for ya!! Hooks was rated one of the lowest scoring schools in the county. So say what you want, but the test scores speak for themselves!

FYI: Hooks puts on 2 pageants a year as fund raisers. The "Miss Hooks" pageant is a fund raiser for the Hooks High School Band and the "Christmas on Main" pageant is put on by Hooks Christian Services to make sure all children in Hooks get something from Santa. Kali Endsley directs these pageants out of love and kindness. Of course she has to find judges she knows but I can assure you she does her best to find people who do not know anyone in Hooks. She is fair and kind to all of the contestants. I have seen her really being pushed to the limit by contestants mothers and family and she has always held her thoughts to herself and done the best she could. If you feel things are not being done right offer your time for free for this community then judge how things are done. Not everyone can win but as parents you must let your child know she is a winner just for getting on that stage no matter if she has won or not. As for the comment from the other person about fake tans, well thats just part of pageants, along with lots of hair spray and fancy dresses...if you don't choose for your daughter to have one, that's okay too, that is your choice.
I know all of the above....FYI: I do volunteer when the oppertunity arrises, which isn't often in Hooks. Just because you offer your time doesn't mean that you will be able to help, most of the time they prefer people whom they know. And it isn't Kali, its the judges. They know nothing of pagents, and you can say over and over that it has nothing to do with who you know, but I can pick the winners each year without seeing the pictures, just by picking out the last names. And I'm sorry, if its that easy you can't possibley say that it is fair! Which all children are winners, but its sad when they don't get a fair chance to begin with.

<quoted text>I understand. I bought a house in Hooks in the early thinking the small town enviroment would be a better palce to raise my kids that the the Liberty Eylau area. Boy was I wrong. It is a clicky little town and if you are not from there, you are on the outside looking in. I had a stepbrother killed in an auto accident and every pastor in Hooks came to the family house to offer condolence except the almight Roy Ford, who incidently lived a block away. And Pat James (aka Joe Dirt) who runs the local tire shop is one of the most arrogant a--holes I ever tried to do business with. After a couple of trips to his business and getting treating like crap, I decided to carry my business to Texarkana. By the way Pat, the mullet went out years ago. The pharmcist is an outstanding human being. D. Hinman had a affair with C. Goodwin years ago when they were both married and he was still a cop and now he is a so called pillar of society there. The school pushes athletics over education. There are good people in Hooks, but they are not in the clicks. Don't forget Danny Trout was the first person busted for cheating at the casino's in Shreveport. I, therefore, am not impressed with leadership in Hooks. Back to LE for me.
You know your so right!! I did the same thing, bought a house there thinking it would be a nice small town to raise children, but it just isn't.

I thought the topic was education. I never said small town people were inherrently nicer than you guys. I'll debate that as well because I do believe we are that too, but you haven't IMO finished this one yet.

So how do you explain Hannah winning in '05? Do you attribute it to our popularity, wealth, roots in the community, or what?

She's just very beautiful realitycheck, she won on her own merits. Janitor dad and mom had nothing to do with it.

That could be. Maybe it is. I don't think so, but maybe you do. I know a lot of grown up graduates of Hooks though. I'm willing to match wits with you telstar if you want to play a game. What part of the INTELLIGENT world are you from?

#1 Hooks is not a "sucky place"!
You don't have to be a Cranfill, Tidwell, Whisenhunt, etc... You must not know much about Hooks.
I have lived here over 15 years and was accepted just as if I was part of the community, even though I live in Leary.
My son graduated from Hooks and I have to say that all the kids here stick together and when they become friends, they are friends for life.(Whether it be Whisenhunt, Trotter, Oestmann, etc...)
Our school is one of the best in the state of Texas.
At least our kids don't have to worry about how things are in big cities. Thugs, inpolite, disorderly, etc... is not tolerated in our community.
This post is laughable. I also lived in Hooks for a while, and from personal experience I can tell you I was treated differently than those who had been living there. Some people may not know about Hooks, but I do. Hooks has some of the most backhanded, meanest, and worst gossips I have ever been associated with. BTW, please don't put the Trooter name with those others, but you can add a few more to that list. Also, r us really making a discrepancy between Hooks and Leary? They are right next to each other. Oh yeah, you had a point #1, what is point #2.

Pageants to me are just parades that say "look at me." They produce more of the same ol same ol cookie cutter women we have around here. Too much make up and too much sass and not enough brains and common sense. Unfortunately, the ones with the brains and common sense have the sense enough to get out of here, so we are stuck in a cycle of producing the same girls over and over again. My daughter is in ballet, she travels the country to perfect her dancing skill. Dance or sports require some skill while pageantry requires no skill at all just the willingness to be gawked at. I believe that girls that develop into strong young women have good relationships with their fathers and having something productive to put their heart into while at the same time building independence self-confidence within their peer group are the keys to growing a successful young woman. Oh, I am sure pageants are fun and all that, but it just seems like they are sexualizing our girls at too young an age.
my little girl wants to start ballet also. shell start this next school year. and shes SO excited.i thought about doing it with her to tone my body. but i think id look more like a dork. lol no more poptarts at midnight for me.

yep. its the SAME way in simms, tx. and i heard those same words fly out of the mouth of a local pagent dress store ower. i wont say names because i dont want to hurt bussiness. but, this person told me that if i want to let my daughter win, to run in a pagent where those "always winners," are giving up their crowns. so if my baby wants to do pagents then ok, but we will do national and internation types. not pokey hillbilly rigged ones.

In regards to those who don't like hooks or say that it's a racist town, you're completely wrong. I currently attend hooks high school and racism is a thing of the past.. for the school atleast.

our fire dept. is growing and doing well, our scores last year weren't great for the high school, but we're working on that this year with our new principal, mr. kruger.

i've been to three schools in my life and hooks is the best by far.

and yes, my mom's maiden name is tidwell so maybe i am treated better.. ha. no im kidding, hooks is a pretty fair town unles you choose to act ignorant.

as far as the paranoid woman above who insists we don't call her by her slave name.. your username says enough about you. you'd clearly suspect any town of racism. but i can ssure you that you are wrong about hooks.

its a great place to live and im proud to call it my home.

and we aren't dumb and we don't have propblems with english or grammar. i'm fourth in my class right now, and i consider myself to be very well educated.

hooks is great guys. take it from someone who lives there now rather than from someone who hasn't been there in decades.

Sweetie...I usually don't do this but...you need to proof read what you write and use correct punctuation and capitalization before you post about how smart you are...
