WHO KILLED JOHNNY McCABE?

Sounds like a case of bullying gone way to far!!! Right the older Walter had to bring along 2 others for back-up. John was a small kid to begin with and it took three of them. I was shocked to find out those 3 lived right in my neighborhood. Like John's sister said they probably walked right by her in the hallways at school. I heard rumors 20+ years ago Michael Ferreira was involved. Not sure why the "Tewksbury Police" couldn't crack the case... guess they were too busy chasing kids out of the tennis court at Livingston and McDonalds to do any real investigating. John was in a couple of my classes always running in before the bell rang and having some funny excuse as to why he was late, again. He had a great sense of humor and knew how to catch even the brightest teacher off guard. I remember one day he was chewing gum in class and the teacher said "John take that gum out of your mouth and throw it in the waste paper basket" John said " It's not chewing gum it's aspirgum (new kind of gum that had aspirin or something in it I don't think it is still around)- medicine for my sore throat. Well the class broke out in laughter - gotcha! That was John ... quick and funny always one up on the teacher. Yep he would have been a real contender in this crazy world of ours if only given a chance. I was at the dance that night and heard the news at the Billerica/Tewksbury football game the next day. We were all stunned. No grief consulting for us back then just an empty chair where he once sat. I do remember John's dad saying some really comforting things to us either at the wake or funeral, he was the one strong for us. Now I hope these word can be strong for him and his family, justice will be done. I do believe John is in a better place. Amen

Can't believe it took the police 41 years to solve this murder, especially when there were all kinds of rumors regarding the three who committed this crime. However, the good thing is it has now been solved. Kudos to John's family and friends for keeping it alive all these years. Maggie, you did a great job, but enough is enough. You've patted yourself on the back with comments on every article.
I can tell Y'all are a small close knit community. As an outsider and from a distance, I admire Maggie for her continuing involvement. If she feels some personal satisfaction for the role she has played in helping this along, good for her. It's been a long time coming.

Carol, thank you for keeping up the vigil. I remember you from school, though I don't think you would remember me. I actually was googling John's name on Wednesday to see if anything new has come up. Two days later this news breaks. I am still stunned. I was in Tewksbury last October for the class reunion, and visited Tewksbury Cemetary, paying my respects to my grandparents and everyone else whose name I recognized, and John McCabe was one of them.
I'm glad to have found this thread, thanks again for keeping Johnny's memory alive.

Thank you for your kind response. I have been very careful to tell what I consider the truth: Many of John's friends came forward and none of them ever forgot him, because that was the kind of kid he was, and the kind of kids we were and the people we grew up to be; but the cops had 41 years and there were things yet to be done. John's friends, myself proud to be among them, refused to go away. That helped a great deal in getting the recent momentum on this case - I know that for a fact. I am proud when I read that Mr. McCabe just had his first good night's sleep in 41 years, and that John's mother can stop looking in each face she sees for her son's murder. Goddess Bless You!

Kevin was my half-brother. I really wish I had know all of you were interested in this for all of these years. I am very relieved for the McCabe family that John's murderers have confessed. My brother (and probably some of you) were interrogated for months.

Hi Amy! It is really quite amazing to me to hear from a relative of Kevin after all this time. He was a fun kid to know - tough, smart, funny, and always ready to party. It was terrible to hear about his death when it happened. I always wondered what he did or did not know. For many years, some thought he was the only one who knew who was in the car that night. Strange days indeed! Take care.

Hi Carol-

It has been a very emotional day for my mother. You haven't heard from us because my parents thought that someone had been arrested and charged for the murders about a year after it occurred. This arrest has been quite a shock to them and has brought back some upsetting memories.

The weeks following John's murder were very difficult from what my mom tells me. The police came to the house in the middle of the night to interrogate Kevin. Kevin had no idea what happened to John. They were not together when John got into the car... they saw each other at the dance, but they didn't leave together.

I truly hope these monsters come clean and tell the entire story of what exactly happened that night.

Hello my name is Craig Dougherty.
I grew up 10 houses away from John McCabe. He actually taught me and gave me his newspaper route. His family had been telling the story in the recent newspaper about how he save a Canadian Goose one day and I remember that he walked by my house with the goose and my mother took a picture with John and the Goose and me and others. The family has set up a page called "In Memory of John J McCabe" on Facebook. They did not have a picture of this story so I posted mine. They family thanked me so much for it and are using it on their site. Why I say this is that they have told me that they would loved to have others share whatever memories, photos that others have about John and even to just send condolences.

Cheers,
Craig

Dear Amy, how unfortunate this must all have been for your family, too. I regret that Kevin was all caught up in the rumor mill, but it was a prevalent rumor right from the start, and although gossip can be a horrible thing, it was helpful in this matter that over the years the talk kept up. Everyone liked your brother. He was what I once called "scrappy" - very funny and cool to hang around with. I actually knew him a little better than John, who died just two years after I moved there. Kevin and my younger sister were "going together" for a short time before Kevin died. If your folks are still alive, and I hope they are, please let them know that I am sorry for what they went through, and I remember Kevin very well and very fondly. You should do as Craig suggests and check out the FB page. Peace!

Thanks Carol. I read your post to my mother and she really appreciated what you said.

Both she and my father are still alive and they have read everything online today. My mom has had a difficult day; hearing of the arrests have brought back a lot of upsetting memories for her. Both of my parents are very surprised that Kevin is mentioned in people's comments. I was only a baby when Kevin died so I am very curious as to why there were so many rumors about him. Did people think he was involved? He was not the only one interrogated in the following months, but I only read mention of him in the comments.

As far as I can recall, and from all I have learned since, NOBODY ever thought Kevin had anything to do with harming John. But he was a good friend of John and he did somehow get caught up in the rumor mill - maybe something he said at the time about just being at the dance with John. Many thought he was hitching home with John, but was prevented from getting in the car - like if he was run off. But nobody ever said anything other than that he was a good friend of John and may have been sent to California, or run off to California, to avoid being hurt himself. As far as I know, everyone was glad when he came back. When I heard he had died, I felt like it was more tragedy heaped on tragedy. SO MANY of the Tewksbury kids died of one thing or another: John, Kevin, Bobby Finnegan, Paul Owens, Diane, the Ciampa kids, Bo Bell, and more... many more... too many more. You would have liked them all, because they were all wonderful in their own way. I again wish you and your parents nothing but peace during these very trying times. It's all so difficult to look back on. I put together a playlist on John's FB memorial page and haven't been able to stop weeping over the loss of our friends, and our innocence. We were just a happy, hopeful little band of kids when all this happened. But now I am a mother and grandmother myself, and do not even have the courage to imagine what it must be like to lose a child. The lullabye at the end of the list made me think of your mother, too. All mothers. Goddess bless you!

I worked on this murder case back in the good old days when I worked for the Tewksbury Police Dept. and you just do not know how relieved I am that the detective has made a case after all of these years. Can't wait to see who else is being arrested. I will be keeping a close eye on this story, having worked on it in the past. Congratulations to the officers who made the arrests.

Anyone with photos of us kids back in 1969 - 1973? I was a JV cheerleader and may be in some pics of Tewks. JV football games, for instance... or in the TMHS yearbook around 1971. Also, I am looking for Linda Saunders or Heather Legakis - need a photo they may have. Please let me know if you can help me locate them, or give them my contact info - [email protected] Thank you!

Then, I'd say it's a good thing that Mr. Brown finally got a conscience. Those scumbags need to pay for this, no matter how long it takes.
