Long live the Motel Caswell. That's the message surrounding a grass-roots movement on Facebook called "Save the Motel Caswell." Its members have grown nearly 500-strong since the social-media collective was kicked off last fall in response to the U.S. Attorney's Office launching a civil-forfeiture procedure against the motel's owners, the Caswell ...

so if the police found drugs in a best western (and most likely they would find some) they would shut them down to? the caswell management doesn't bring the drugs in, some of the clients do just like in any other motel/hotel around here.

If they found drugs there as often and for as long, yes it should be shut down.
The Caswell caters to a certain clientele; everyone knows it. Lets not pretend this is a one time thing. This is a constant. If the owners were trying to clean up the place that would be one thing, but they are not.

Tear that mess down and build a Walgreens. I'm sure if the DEA is involved there is a massive issue there.. Forget the family they shouldn't have been renting it out to dirtbags.

So, where does Tewksbury plan on putting their Homeless shelter? Because this motel is a vital element as a means-of-shelter. I see local families who just lost their homes use the Caswell as a temporary, until they get back on their feet. If this goes away, a homeless shelter is exactly what they will need.

And, don't be a a-hole and say Lowell. Tewksbury, just like every other community need to take care of their own.

Ok so lets say that a black man comes to motel Caswell and wants to rent a room. The management refuses to rent a room to that man because they think and I stress think he will be selling drugs or the think he is a pimp and will be running a house of ill repute from the room. What do you think will happen then. Rev Al Sharpton and Jessey Jackson would be there in a heart beat. The issue is not with the owners of the motel rather the issue is with the people who rent from them. They have to rent to anyone who has the money to pay for a room. And if they refuse to rent to a black man a hispanic an Asian or a white man it is discrimenation. Look at the Craigs List killer. That was in a high end hotel in Boston. So using the mind set of the people who want to shut Caswell down the hotel in Boston should be shut down as well.

They are selling drugs at the High School. Shut that down as well.

The Caswell Family is one of the nicest families i know, they would give you the shirt of their back, a bed to sleep in, and a warm meal to feed your hunger. To say that they cater to a 'certain clientele' is so incredibly ignorant. In a time where many families are struggling to get by, the Motel Caswell has been a place where families who would otherwise be stuck on the streets, can call home. The Caswells ARE good honest people who are trying to run a business and make a living just like the rest of us.

I have a problem with the government taking over ANOTHER private business. Besides the fac that the Caswell serves a purpose - it houses a certain kind of clientelle that I'm sure Tewksbury residents don't want in their "backyard."

This place has been a hole for the last 20 plus years.
The owners need to do something about cleaning it up. Look what Motel 6 did. They have a police detail every weekend to keep the trash out.

Although I find it sad that the government needs to step in and do something about the Motel Caswell, the fact remains that something needs to be done. I lived for 25+ years within walking distance of the Caswell, in a nice rural neighborhood. Numerous times I would drive to the end of my street and see drug arrests and a few times paramedics working on an overdose victim on the lawn out front. The Caswells may be nice people (and no one is claiming they have any direct involvement with drugs themselves) but it doesn't appear they are taking ANY measures to clean up their establishment. It is too bad that DEA or some other branch of government needs to step in but I am sure this is not the first time they have been in touch with the Caswells about their renters and eventually someone needs to step in and do what they are not.

Either clean the place up or get the hell out. Simple as that. It's a dump. One dip in that heart shaped jacuzzi and your next vacation will be in the hospital. Could you imagine whats floating around in those things? Gross.....

The Federal Government only targets businesses and assets of those who are lucky enough to not have mortgages or loans. The Motel 6 has had just as many incidents, and probably more, than the Caswell has had in the last 10 years.(Ask the TPD for the facts). The Caswell has been targeted beacuse it is privately owned and does not have a mortgage, making it easier to seize. The Feds will never go after the bigger Motel 6 chain because they have the resources to fight back and the asset could not be as easily sold off. Also, if the Caswell Motel was "so bad", why wasn't it dealt with in the Town level by Town Hall, Building Inspectors, Board of Health, etc. This is a witch-hunt!

If you close the Caswell - you won't know where the drug dealers are!
It makes the police job much easier to just "raid the Caswell". Why make them move ???

Yah great, they are a nice family... if they are so great then why do they let homeless familes live in a huge dump....It is and has always been gross. No one benefits from staying there and if the family is so freaking caring FIX IT UP AND RESPECT YOUR TOWN and the clients u love soooo much. IT is all about money.. The family should go to.!!!!

I totally agree with you. If you know that this stuff is happening at your establishment, then you do anything you can to clean it up.

This is another case of big government intruding into small business. Who do these people think they are taking over a hardworking families establishment. They should be ashamed. Another reason why NOT to do/ open a business in liberal Mass!!
