Gift Spot May Come to Terre Haute

Full story: WTHI Terre Haute

You may remember there's a Wabash Valley store with the name The Gift Spot. It's an adult bookstore in Marshall, Illinois that's been in a legal battle with the city over what it sells.

When the Marshall, IL store opened up to the chagrin of many Marshall residents, I had a brief conversation with a woman who was a contributing reporter for the Marshall Advocate newspaper. She said that she wanted to see for herself what was in the store. Upon entering, she noticed a floral arrangement on the counter. Not quoting, but it said someting to the effect of "Welcome, Sam's Steakhouse". I was appalled that the owner of Sam's would be welcoming this store to our community. I also entered the store a day or two later to see for myself if the arrangement was truly there. There it was, just as she said.

Minh Martin said there is no correlation to the store in Marshall. I think not. He picked the same store name, even on the new signage he posted on 3rd Street it appears from a distance the sign says "The G Spot", just like the store in Marshall. There is a Gift Spot in Marshall, next to his restaurant, and now one at the rear of his business in Terre Haute.

I would urge the media and people to carefully monitor what is happening there.

wonder how the Marshall store owner feels about Mr Martin using his store name. Is that legal? I personally don't think we need another adult store, next to residental areas. Furthermore I think this will put his struggling steakhouse out of business. Not such a bad thing, send him back to Illinois he can put his store in his front yard.

It wouldn't be a big deal if he would do it legally, instead of trying to slip on by and not go through the appropriate channels.

They also should keep in mind the girlfriend he plans to run this store that has had several DUI'S and a rumored drug abuse problem.

Does he plan to pay taxes on this business and not to pay his employees under the table like he did with my friend?

Of course, many of us here in Marshall wonder, "Where is all of Minh's money coming from?" He has lived a fairly wealthy lifestyle, has built three restaurants...of which you don't see alot of business. What's going on, Minh??

I'll bet the folks at Playboy will have a thing or two to say about his use of their trademarked bunny head on his sign.

Please give me a break. Why do people get so upset over Adult Stores & Clubs and protest it. If you don't like it then don't go in. It's a free country remember. Itís always a big deal just like when Hot Topic came to the Mall people protested outside. Again if you don't like it donít go in, just like the TV if you don't like to show turn channels. But it's a free country and Freedom of speech, unless you are an adult store owner or Strip Club. But if you are a church Organization Scaring everyone telling them they are going to burn in hell thatís ok right..... I support Free Speech all the way around not just what fitís my needs and beliefs...

Really come on..... adults have sex... why not have things to make the sex either better or more exciting. As long as they make sure to check ID's to keep under age children out, I dont see what the big deal is. Sex is a natural part of life. I have been to the one in Marshall and it was clean and the staff was very nice. People just need to grow up. I know someone pretty well that worked at Marshall, Judges, lawyers, doctors and yes people from the church all went a bought stuff at the store, but then complain about them being in business to keep others from knowing... if your search lovers playground online you will see the online store which is where the Marshall Store was linked too...

Don't get me wrong. I am not against businesses like Priscilla's, etc. Not one bit. The thing we fought at Marshall was the negative effects that it had on our community. The owner of The Gift Spot was also the former owner of the Hy-Way News Adult Store. It was shown in court that these businesses had a negative effect on our community. TRW was going to expand and build in that area until upper management saw the store. No go. There was a young girl who was kidnapped from her home here in Marshall, sexually assulted multiple times, before the truck driver who kidnapped her let her go. He was caught several years later, and admitted that he was in the area solely because of the store. There are two murders that have occurred locally that are unsolved. Just before they were killed they had visited the store. Young employees at Arby's next to the store often were afraid to walk to their cars after work. Sex acts were being performed, usually by males, in wide open view next to their cars. Both stores had "viewing booths". These booths had "glory holes", holes between the stalls where a man could place his penis for pleasure (normally by another male). Condoms and sex toys were found scattered outside the store, even found on the soccer field next to the store.

What I am saying is that people just need to be concerned when a business like this comes into your community. I am not sure of Terre Haute's rules regarding adult oriented businesses, but it can be quite a struggle to get a business out once it gets in. Marshall has spent in excess of $300,000. A lot of money know doubt, but if it stops another rape of a 5-year old girl, it is money well spent.

Look Jeff, you can blow your small town smoke up the small minded bible thumpers of your towns butts all you want. Dont pee on my leg and tell me its raining. I work in this area, I eat at Quiznos and Applebees almost daily for lunch--at NO TIME have I or anyone I work with and eat with seen any sex acts being committed in public. There have been no abductions around that area, no rapes nearby, no drugs, no prostitution.

So if these stores "bring" these bad things then you answer me this. There is no adult bookstore or strip club anywhere near 14th and Liberty in Terre Haute. Yet whenever I go through that area to pick up/drop off a co-worker I DO see open air drug sales, blatent prostitution old fat guys picking up scary looking skinny girls with soars on them. Why do I see this here Jeff? Why dont I ever see sex acts in public at 3rd and Greenwood?

I eat in that neighborhood daily and have yet to see all these horrible things you speak of. Now I have been to Fairbanks park TWICE this past year and BOTH times I saw two men doing things that should only happen in prison.

Your problem in Marshall is with the truck drivers. Don't believe me? Go to any interstate rest area and watch as they pick up other males for a few minutes of fun and then the male leaves to jump in another cab.

This happens wherever large amount of trucks park. Go to the pilot on 46, or the truck stop in Brazil and look for the fat girl that drives around the parking lot in a red car with a 10 foot CB antennae on top of it. No adult bookstore there? But she is there hookin! Every driver that works for our company has told me about stories about the tramps at truck stops. Yet, no porn being sold there? Hmmmm

Ok Jim, there is ONE arrest in how many years that Priscilla's has been open? I have seen THPD at the new Wal-Mart at least a dozen times in the past month. So why dont you ban them? Why dont we demand they close down Wal-Mart? They make arrests there several times a week so Wal-Marts = crime according to your "logic" Jeff. So why dont you go picket them since they bring more crime than Priscilla's.

I am extremely offended by Jerry and Eliot. Just because some people complain about an adult bookstore you turn it around on religion. I am a Christian and you may not be. That is your choice and I respect that and I am not going to judge you and I will certainly not tell you that you will burn in hell. Some people are upset about an adult bookstore coming in and you automatically refer to them as "bible thumpers" in a bad way. I think what the problem is here is that there are people that are scared of this place because of what has happened in the past in Marshall before special precautions were put in place. Places like these do draw in some sex offenders so people do have every right to be nervous about it and do need to keep on it to make sure the owners are taking every precaution. Does that not seem understandable? Why do you need to blame it on "bible thumpers?"

I could really care less if I offended you. I was born and raised in the Catholic Church. I'm still a member of my church. I just don't see the need to shove MY values down other's throats. I don't see where it is my, your or ANYONE'S place to tell someone "you cant have a store that sells porn, cause X Y and Z will happen there!" Especially when you have no facts to back it up that THIS place is the ONLY cause.

I hate bed bath and beyond, I dont like what goes on at bed bath and beyond, I dont agree with the values of bed bath and beyond. So you know what I do. I DONT GO THERE! I dont picket them, I dont put them in an axis of evil with kit and caboodle and the baby gap.
I just dont go there.

If you dont like them so much Misjudged, dont go there. But don't be a fear monger and try to scare others to your opinion with BS facts.

Eloit you are right the police are at Wal Mart a lot for shop lifters but people don't go in there look at cans of soup , clothes , and the beef roasts and get turn on then go out rape our kids if you have kids and you found them with books from there because some one had got one read it and got rid of it before his wife found out that he had it how would make you feel or kids found it took it to school little 5th and 6th graders that would not upset you and if you go back 20 years or so stores like Wal Mart sold the Play Boy etc. BUT DON'T DO IT ANY MORE WHY ??
