This would have been a great opportunity for the unions to be part of the solution instead of the problem.

Unions were not the problem...just like everything else, its greed!
Why dont you work for pennies and watch the corporates make millions.

I guess the peer pressure to stop eating junk food didn't help either. Sales have been affected. Downsizing production due to the poor economy was a factor. Who knows, maybe the Mayan prophecy could be influencing the choices.

Do you work for Hostess? Do you work for a union company??
corporate always head to the news to declare that there is a union problem, and people are always down on them.
What about the company that want paycuts, or cut your benefits??
The union is formed to try and protect this. Thats the only help they have. When the unions are gone, do you really think your company will not jump to lower your pay?

The company is in bankruptcy for the 2nd time in 8 years because of piss poor management and bad corporate decisions. You can only file a 2nd bankruptcy after waiting 7 years. Looks to me they used the tax write-offs and tanked it, never intending to pay off the debts and get back in the black. They're selling off and making profits for the upper end people and dumping the union people. Odds are the company will restructure and open under a different name without a union shop.

What were the employee pay rates? As I understand it the Bakers Union was the holdout so I don't know if the line people were union or not, do you?
Not every union worker makes $40/hr. That's the skilled trades and not all of them either.

Since they went on strike that means no unemployment,no benefits, and because the company is liquidating no pensions.Am I right??

Where did you come up with that. They didn't dump the union, the union dumped the company... and the workers. They were in the process of bankruptcy, court-appointed trustee, process started. The Union decided not to play ball and went on strike. The trustee appointed by the court is the one that oversees the company for the court to make sure neither side gets screwed by the other. The union and management gets to present evidence and testify to the bankruptcy court. The union wouldn't cooperate, decided on a strike.. sooo, the owner said to heck with it, shut it down. Instead of the picket line, the workers can get in the un-employment line. You will see much more of this in the future. The evil rich "upper end" people, as you call it, have reached the end of their rope and are sick of all the handouts, unions, takers, liberals, whatever you want to call it. The "upper end" people are tired of being called the villan just because they are successful. So, they are going to do something about it, just as hostess is doing here. Unemployment is going to climb to record levels as more and more companys do the same thing. I guess the good side to a company biting the dust like this is that the union bites the dust too.
