They report the kind of news their corporation allows. They are no longer a locally owned business that stays in touch with the community. Being corporate owned media they are subject to approval by the corporate guidelines.
That and their reporters are not investigative journalists.

Remember, the news is a television program just like anything else you watch. The goal is not to accurately report facts. The goal is to get people to watch television so that they can sell advertising. News programs will shape their reporting based on what they perceive that their target audience wants to hear about. To meet that goal different news programs choose which stories they report on and which ones they don't.

There is no formal government screening of our local news stories, just a series of decisions aimed at boosting the number of people who view their program.

How do you expect them to report the news when they can't even get the weather right? If the goal of the news dept may be to keep us watching, then the goal of the weather department must be to keep us guessing.

A few years ago, Tim Porter, and elected offical of Vigo County got into a bad car wreck after drinking, almost killing his young son. Pot was also found in the car. An elected official getting into a bad wreck, while drunk, with a minor passanger, having drugs on him, and losing his job as the elected offical would be be big news right? No, Tim Portor was driving Kevin Orpurt's car and coming from his house. The news station did not even briefly mention it. Cover up.

I agree, a cover up, but not a government conspiracy, just a business deciding that it was better to not report that story since one of its own employees was involved.

You can scoff at Topix, and I will admit there is a lot of low life trash talk, but until I found this forum, I was missing out on a lot of real news about what is going on in this town. Stuff you would NEVER see in the newspaper or on TV.

Talked to some well educated people the other day who say they never read the Trib Star or watch local Tv, get all their news online, especially the weather.

But you have stated the opposite point of views than these on here for years? And saying that the news is always accurate and that no dishonest people can ever exist among the powers that be or the county controlled news.

Did you awaken finally?

I'm not saying it was a government conspiracy, but it obviously was avoided because of an employee of their's being involved. It should have been big news, but no one knew about it. They somehow got WTWO not to report it either.

Tim Porter has never been an "elected official". He was hired to be the Executive Director of Vigo County Area Planning by members of that body, and he did that job for almost a decade.

After he got drunk and wrecked Kevin Orpurt's car, Porter was quickly and unceremoniously fired by those same planning commissioners.

The tv stations may have sat on that story (especially 10 because of the Orpurt connection, as others assert), but not the Tribune-Star. We read about Porter on the front page.

Personally, I have no faith in our local television stations as a source of news. I stopped watching years ago. If you think their reporting is an accurate reflection of what's happening in Terre Haute, you are woefully uninformed.

Are you sure? I thought he was on the city council before he was part of the planning commission.

Nope. Porter never ran for or got appointed to an elected office.

After the episode with Kevin's car, it seems unlikely that he ever will.

You should know your shit before you post. I am a close relative to them, know what his job was, was at the hospital, ect. And if you read the topic you would have noted that it says WTHI not Tribune Star.
