Due to today's shooting in Connecticut, Vigo County schools will be "beefing up" security. I'm not sure at this point what that will entail, but as a parent, I am a bit relieved that they will at least be doing something.

am I reading these posts correctly? This horrible tragedy is being reduced to some criticism of our local school superintendent?

OMG! We need gun control in this country. I know of people in this town who buy and sell guns and it is perfectly legal.

I don't care if you are a Rep, Dem, whatever. Guns should not be easily sold as they are in Terre Haute.

There definitely needs to be a change. All you have to do is tell them over the speaker that you're there to pick up your child, and the door is unlocked. Even though it may be a pain, there certainly needs to be more precautionary measures taken before someone is let inside the building.

Really????
Do you think that the pisspoor excuse of a human who did this couldn't have gotten a gun even if gun ownership were banned? If you care nothing for human life, children at that, then you will have no regard for rules either. If he was a determined individual he could have used a knife, a bomb, a vehicle, poison, attack dogs, snakes, chainsaw........
care to ban all those items?

They do at north and south I think, but not at the middle schools. I agree, it's insane!

Perhaps idiots like the shooter need to get a grip on what life is really all about. It's called coping skills! I'm tired of listening to the media and shrinks talk about possible mental problems and what made them do such a heinous act. Quit making excuses for these people and call it for what it is.

I don't care if the shooter was mentally disabled, these children did nothing to him. The pundits are suggesting perhaps he was autistic? I find it shameful that every time a child acts up he/she is deemed autistic or falls under the "autistic spectrum". What happened to discipline?

This idiot knew right from wrong, that is why the coward shot himself after killing innocent children. Others just like him have done the same thing.

But now we have to lock down our schools because the crazies of the world are on the loose. Just last week another idiot who could not cope with life decided to shoot people at a shopping mall. Should we lock them down too?

Perhaps we should change the failed social experiment that the Dr. Phil's of the world have promoted. Quit making excuses for erratic behaviors.

I think if more parents would use more discipline some of these kids would not be the way they are. An old fashioned spanking never hurt anyone.

i agree giggles but now days you cant spank your kids they is a big diff between discipline and abuse but if you spank your kids child prtection gets involved thats whats wrong with society now they took ours rights as parents away to discipline our own kids and look what happens they go out and kill innocent people and children and blame others or say they have mental issues and the now these people will insanity and get off with a slap on the wrist im sure they are issuses but they is also warning signs that could of prevented all this maybe its sad all the way around

A spot on reply. As a people we are sadly ignorant of our own history. The worst school killing in America was not in the last twenty years and did not involve any sort of modern weapons.

I'm seriously considering homeschooling. Not only due to this shooting, but because the school system is hell bent on integrating autistic children with the rest. I know this doesn't sound PC, and maybe a little harsh...but the truth is, some of them, can be a real danger to others.

Some autistics lack basic self control and are disconnected from basic human emotion. The teachers aren't allowed to discipline.

I'd really like to know how many incidents involving autistic children have been swept under the rug. A parent receives a call from the school informing them that little suzy feel off the monkey bars on recess. Did she fall or was she pushed?

My kindergartner came home and told me about how the teacher had to explain to the rest of the class why one of the kids screamed and banged their head, that's just the way he is...he's autistic.

He's also a distraction and interfering with the other children's learning time.

Thats when they SHOULD as a school step in and remove a child like that out of the classroom. I know they all need to learn from each other but when a child (anyone really) starts hurting themselves next will be another child or adult.

It's not just at school. It's everywhere, I worry any and every time I am not there to protect my kids.

Whether that's pure madness or pure evil doesn't matter, the end result is the same. Horrific!

Lets not forget that today's society has been a battle of free speech;allowing the movie industry, video games, and news media to create a revenue by exposing our young people to the ideas that explicit song lyrics, bloody guns and gut shows as well as adult rated video games are"ok".
Most;not saying all; of society has been lead to believe that having issues with the realities of daily life.struggling with discerning right from wrong, and coming to grips with our emotions is labeled a mental disorder..WHAT!!//???
We talk about the other countries issues while sweeping our own issues under the rug..

We dont need gun control. That only takes guns out of the hands of people like you and me that want to protect our families. What we need to do is be more aware of people around use that have mental issues and take care of them. Quit cutting the funding for the nut houses and lock these people up and get them help.Eeveryone of these shooters have some type of mental issue. Gun control will not stop the local shit bags in getting guns or high cap mags. It will stop people like you and me from getting guns. Reguardless we need to quit worring abouts guns and help our kids with this. Even thou they were not there they see it on tv and worry is that going to happen to me. Support your local schools, support ur local law enforcement, support ur fire departments, EMS workers, Hospital staff. they are the one who have to face the madness everyday so people like us can get on the internet and make total asses of ourselfs. If you see someone or know someone that may be planning to do something like this or see someone that just doesnt fit in where they are at call 911. That is our job as Americans. Support our friends, families, and community.

I feel sorry for your kids if you homeschool them because they will turn out as ignorant as you are. How unfortunate for them.
