For those of you that dont know, and there are many because so little was said after it ocurred. Dennis Raetz ISU's winningest loser and apparent local hero punched the safety glass out of the press box at a recent North-South game. The glass rained on the crowd below cutting many elementary students that were their on a field trip of sorts. Mr. Raetz's punishment? His son is supposed to tell him he cant go up there anymore. To those that witnessed this, there was blood all over the seats and many people with serious cuts. Terry Modessitt filed NO charges against Raetz. There is an appropriate charge for this, Criminal Recklessness. Any other citizen would have been charged. If Terry doesnt file charges in this situation I will pull support for Terry and throw everything to Gary Rider. Terry? We are waiting.

Did the investigating police agency (ISU) actually present the case to Modesitt for prosecution/evaluation and he chose not to file charges? Or did ISUPD not even present it?

Im not sure what the procedure for this is but it was a county event in the city. The ISUPD is all over the streets of TH bothering citizens and all is ok-cops is cops. Why is it that this bully hero is above being investigated by other police agencies? Does that mean if Craig Shaffer goes on campus and rapes a girl,or Larry Bird slits someones throat on campus that the Dream Police make the final call. I dont know- I do think if Modesitt doesnt push for more info in this it is gonna come back and haunt him badly. They love to drag some college kid through the system for havin 4 beers instead of 3 and driving his car, but then go and turn their heads to this? Its not murder like the Brugnaux/Wright/Scott conspiracy but its pretty bad to just let slide.

I agree with this because those "dime store cops" (ISU PD) patrol the whole downtown like the Nazi Gestapo when they should be staying on campus. They scour the area for any hint of a DUI bust for even the slightest infraction to get points for themselves but when a controversial situation like this comes up it's "hands off" and turn the other cheek. So go hassle some college kids for a few too many beers and let the little kids on a field trip get injured. Yep balls of steel guys, balls of steel...

Terry doesn't have time to investigate such things on his own, didn't you know he's ONLY part-time?! Maybe he could get one of his gazillion Deputy Prosecutors to do it but I doubt it. I guess we got what we paid for, a part-time Prosecutor that could give a f**k about our "little problems" as long as his private firm is successful.

Okay, it makes sense that ISUPD was the lead investigating agency as the incident took place on University property, but it remains unclear if they actually presented the case to the Prosecutor.

Get off his a$$. Dennis Raetz was the winningest coach ever at ISU. My God he was like 90-130 or something like that. You dont prosecute heros like that in Terre Haute! They are above reproach and something like LAWS, little rules were meant to be brroken by big people.

Uhh...wait. Craig Shaffer did get away with anything for years. He was a legendary coke dealer. This is a bunch of crap. Where are the other agencies? Where is the news? I hope they sue his ass off for this. That is not even normal thinking! Punching a glass window over a crowd of people?!!

Are there any cases like this that have ever been prosecuted in the past to go by? If it is not prosecuted, which I am not sure the need for, I would expect the private firm attorneys to line up for the personal lawsuits very soon, if not already filed. I am sure someone with doxpop will keep us informed. If this is the worst thing Modesitt has done in his short political career, I can move on from that. Let us know when the case is for certain to have been provided to the prosecuting office, would ya?

It was my understanding that the campus police turned this in last Monday to the Prosecuters ofc--I remember being impressed that they didn't try to squash it since he was a former employee. Maybe I misunderstood.

Ok then- Ill give him a week to file charges. In that time he should have had plenty of time to sort this out. Any charges filed after that would just to calm the massess. I believe in this guy but my faith is waining because of this and a few other minor things related to public figures. Well, his choice of errand boy was less than impressive (J.C.). We will see. Im betting on the right horse and if this isnt it, the money will go somewhere else.

You can bet they did. The only reason the prosecutor got any info at all was public pressure. I can read the report now "Mr. Raetz hurriedly reached to answer his phone as he was awaiting results for scarlet fever for one of the Congo children that he sponsors. As Mr Raetz reached for his solar charged environmentally friendly telephone his hand became entangled in his Jesus necklace. Mr Raetz's work worn hands (Peace Corps '74) lost control of the phone and it bounced off the glass, ever so lightly. He sustained serious injury when as the glass flew to the crowd below, Mr Raetz had to be physically restrained as he wanted to cover the bodies beneath by covering them with his own. Since the incident, Mr Raetz has been in constant prayer vigil." This bullshit town will pull anything. I really, really hope "for the children" that no dangerous baby killers left the stadium at .09, they went to jail.

Maybe he wasn't prosecuted because it wasn't an open and shut case. Yes, he hit a window, but did he do it with the intention to break it. It was a big game and a big ending. It might not be over for Raetz, the criminal part is over, but there is civil part. While I believe any civil lawsuits is silly and unwarrented (yes, people got cut, but people get cut everyday and mroe then likely, you probably wouldn't even know anyone was cut now), there is always that possibility.

Wait, what difference does it make whether he MEANT to break it? Does a drunk driver that hits an innocent child MEAN to kill them? Hell no but its treated the same way. You behave poorly and it results in an injury or a death, you pay the price. AND, as far as the civil end of it, yip, Id sue his ass off. These kids were young, do you think the paranoia of EVER going anywhere without having to look over your shoulder is ever gonna go away? what is wrong with your thinking or are you Raetz?

No doubt, that cop that ran over those bikers in Indy and killed one of them didn't MEAN to drive drunk on duty while making an emergency run and killing someone in the process be he did! We all have to pay the price UNLESS the agency having authority covers it up and buries it by not filing charges. So the real questions would be; Who was the agency having authority? Could the prosector instigate charges if he thought they were justified? Those are the 2 critical questions that need to be answered!
