Is it legal to have chickens in the city of Terre Haute? These are close to Collett Park. Just wondering.

Terre Haute, at one time, had/has a farm animal ordinace prohibiting keeping them INSIDE the city limits. Chickens would fall into that catagory as well as horses, goats, cows, etc.
City limits on the north side end at Hawthorne Ave so if you saw chickens on Park Ave in North Terre Haute they are not inside the city limits. If you saw them on Park St in Terre Haute there may be an infraction.
It is possible that someone may have obtained a permit to keep a special breed of chicken in town.
Why not ask a neighbor ?

I think you are allowed to have 5 within the city limits.

The police department apparently only had one in their offices so I guess they were legal.

After checking with the Vigo Co zoning dept once, they said "No hoofed animals" can legally be kept in the entire county unless the land is zoned for commercial or private farm.

Do you have a problem with it? Shouldn't your neighbors be allowed to produce their own food?

The county has NVER had an ordinance against hoofed animals but Terre Haute had 1 against CLEFT HOOFED animals, meaning pigs, cows goats sheep. Can actually have a horse if you have so many sqae t of tre per animal.

I heard someone let a chicken loose inside police headquarters. Actually in a room with a murder suspect. And no, I'm not making this up. True story!

When we lived in Spelterville Sub which is well outside TH city limit, we asked about keeping goats and were told the same thing about our property not zoned for hoofed animal keeping

No problem at all and they are not my neighbors. I live far away. I just asked a simple question. Whatever it takes to feed your family is fine with me.

I'd rather have chickens next door than some dumb ass school bus driver and her ridiculous 11-foot or so yellow wall next to me. I mean, she's blocking my beautiful view of the splendor that is the Terre Haute residence...

Wait a minute... Maybe that's not a bad thing...

Do you need to have your property zoned as agricultural land. Or you may only need to have a special permit for your (pet'(s). If a special permit is in need than you may only be allowd to have a certain number of them .

You do not have to have your property zoned as agricultural land. There is no city ordinances prohibiting the keeping of chickens. just no Roosters, no walking them on leashes in city parks or cemeteries, and you must keep the area clean. We were aired twice on channel 10 featuring our chickens and gardens. We have had no problems since then with anyone telling us they weren't allowed. We did extensive research first and talked to many government officials before making the decision to raise chickens.
