On the front page of the Tribune Star today, the spin masters from the Vigo County School Corp proudly announced that SAT Scores rose 15 points this year. Funny, they didn't mention that it was also announced (in the Indy Star) these figures:

Math Scores Vigo: 497

Math Scores National: 514

Writing Scores Vigo: 476

Write Scores National: 488

I'll let you math experts figure out the percentages below the national average in Vigo. Who is trying to fool us? Tanoos? The School Board? It's so obvious when they leave out anything that tells the real truth. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

We expect teachers to teach our children, we expect them to be role models, we expect them to care, we expect them to put in a lot of hours for little pay. What we don't often take in to consideration is parents role in THEIR children's education. Lets address the obvious first... Yes they have summer vacations; bonus of the job. Most teachers I know (which is a lot) work a summer job, spend their summer planning for the next school year, and furthering their education.

Education of children should be looked upon as a collaboration between educators and parents. We live in a time of rushing from place to place, we live in a time of parents too strung out to perform the necessary day to day needs for their children, we live in a time of zero responsibility.

I agree the education system needs reformed but I think the politicians are going about it all wrong. Just my two cents, I'm sure it's not a popular opinion. I'm okay with that.

It's usually only the college bound students that take the SAT, so these are also the students that's parents care or they are motivated enough to make up for lack of parental involvement on their own. Therefore if we must place the blame are kids in Vigo county genetically inferior to the rest of the nation? We have five colleges in this town! Surely there are some intelligent genes. Do other towns not deal with half azzed parents, or students in extra curricular activities? The numbers don't lie all, with all things equal our school system is not adequately preparing kids for success.

Point is, our state has made it impossible for teachers to teach. The unfortunate fact is teachers are now required to teach what is on the mandatory standardized tests. Standardized tests do not measure intelligence or the volume of knowledge. It's cool though, we have 5 colleges and a high poverty rate.

Some people do not have any idea what some children and teenagers live with. You think all college bound SAT takers have parents involved in their lives? I call bullshit. Any idiot can get a college degree with enough perseverance, look around, I'd be willing to bet you know someone with that piece of paper that you think really???

From the test scores, it would appear that college bound students in Vigo County are dumber than the national average. How can this be with all the liberal professors' children, not to mention the doctors' children who attend public schools? It would seem that the genetic material is present--plenty of good, intelligent DNA. Howsomever, the school system is failing to teach at a desirable level. Tanoos and the school board MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. Vote out all of these syncophants as soon as possible. Lets have a new superintendent and a whole new school board to bring Vigo County SAT scores at least up to the national average.

The Vigo schools have the same average as the state of Indiana. As to why they're below for national average......demographics, plain & simple.

Just like TH South was above the state average. North was next falling just below the state average followed by West Vigo.

You missed the line that some students without parental support can manage to motivate themselves, and the hint that this lack of support does not only occur in Vigo County, we are not the only place in the US that would be affected by poor parenting. So if you think there are people with a college degree that don't deserve it what would you suggest, standardized testing perhaps?

I did miss that. You win. I never said they did not deserve it. You missed the little nugget that said perseverance. Any one that puts work in to something that is not easily obtained deserves what they work for.

My original thought was basically boiled down... We want to place blame on this person or that group... What we get is a lot of nothing. As one of my co workers likes to say "you are either fixing the problem or part of the problem".

And standardized testing is a joke.

Good luck with the lynch mob set out to crucify the people brave enough to spend their day with your children.

talk about diversonary tactics! Most of these posts are way off the subject and trying to distract the citizens of Vigo County from the fact that the school system is sooo sooo bad. It should not be. We have some great kids who come from good homes and a lot of intelligent students in the school system. But they are not being well served or taught on a level which would give them better test scores. The school system sucks. They keep teachers on the job who are not qualified and just have some connection to Tanoos or the System.

Vote out all school board members. Get rid of tanoos.

Hmmm.... Last year started school choice. So you have students with a lower household income infiltrating private schools.

I wonder why their ISTEP scores didn't drop? Maybe because their sole focus isn't ISTEP?

It is always easy to shift the blame from the schools to the parents. It is always easier to blame it on demographics. Why don't most of you hold VCSC accountable? VOTE THEM OUT

You are missing it, the teachers and the school board have their hands tied by the state. They are required to keep a certain pace in the class room even if the kids fall behind by the state. They are monitored for this it is mandatory. Vote the school board out, it won't matter until the state starts looking at education differently.

You are sooooo right idits!!!!!

Unfortunately they have been trying to fix the problem since it started. meaning from the begining

So really the only thing a parent can do is work with the school, teacher, and child in order for the child to thrive.

I know in these days it is very very hard to do. But as long as you have a school and teacher to work with you your child should improve.

I do know if a parent shows interest in their childs education IT DOSE make a huge difference.
